My quick top 15 Doors Songs. 1. The End 2. Touch Me 3. The Crystal Ship 4. Not To Touch The Earth 5. Soul Kitchen 6. Don’t You Love Her Madly 7. Rider’s On the Storm 8. Break On Through To The Other Side 9. Hello, I Love You 10. Twentieth Century Fox 11. L.A. Woman 12. Love Me Two Times 13. Back Door Man 14. Strange Days 15. Light My Fire OK, carllove, per your suggestion in the Shoutbox, sure, I'd love to comment on your list!
- The End - #1 - The surprises continue! While I do think The End is essential Doors' listening (I had it at #16 on my list), I didn't expect to see it as THE MOST essential. - Touch Me - #2 - It might be Jim's most complete vocal - rock, pop, jazz, crooning...
- Not To Touch The Earth -#4 - Yes, I love it. Wish they would've finished The Celebration Of The Lizard on Waiting For The Sun. - Twentieth Century Fox - #10 - Another song I like a lot but I don't know if I could go Top 10 with it. Side Note: I saw Robby perform it live a few years ago and he rocked it. - Back Door Man - #13 - Is there a conspiracy to drive me crazy? - Light My Fire - #15 - I put it at #1. I think Light My Fire has been represented on every list (it better be!), but I thought it would have a higher showing across the board. Are people sick of it? - Not a fan of Morrison Hotel, huh?
Thank you for participating. Let it roll...all night long!
The End was lifted up for me, when Apocalypse Now was released. I wrote what I consider quite an amazing essay in High School, comparing Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness to Apocalypse Now and that song has burnt into my brain ever since. It was so perfect for that movie and that novel and just brought to the forefront of the Amazing lyrics that Jim Morrison had written. The cadence is perfect. It’s just perfect. “I’ll Never Look Into Your Eyes Again” - OMG dang. Like - everyone has thought that - but no one had ever sang that before. Lyrics are so in point in this song. They just blow me away. Touch Me - Yeah - again just about another perfect song, with a perfect vocal. “Now, I’m Going to Love You, ‘ Til the Heaven’s Stop The Rain”. Yep! Not To Touch The Earth - gets you going. Like in a good way. Like let’s all just run away. Kinda perfect Covid song. I just like the sound of Twentieth Century Fox. It reminds me of the Velvet Underground. It could be one of their songs. Back Door Man rocks! Light My Fire is all Ray Manzarek’s keyboard’s, which I love. It still made my top 15. Lyrics so Meh. Morrison always has great vocals, but those lyrics can be off the chart. They are not on Light My Fire. No - like more than one of us here - not a Morrison Hotel fan.

Before we close the door on this segment ( ) I wanted to make a few comments on the subject. First, I really enjoyed reading everyone's lists, and it was quite eye opening for me, mainly because there were so many different tastes represented from each of us. There didn't seem to be any general pattern to our favorites. I like that. It's not a popularity poll, but a discussion opportunity. I'd like to throw out a few observations and some of my personal opinions on a few of the songs: I think Twentieth Century Fox is underrated to some degree. Not just here but in general. It always seems to get overlooked, when fans talk about how great of a lineup the debut album has. It's one of the simpler and more poppy songs of the Doors, and that's one of the things I find appealing about it. The lyrics are almost to the point of being goofy, but the instrumentation keeps the song moving along pretty well. It's a fun song by a dark band. On the other hand I feel like The End is fairly overrated. I understand why so many people like it, but I just find it boring. I don't think I've ever really "gotten" it. People Are Strange is a great song, but I so wish there was more to it. It's only one verse with a repeat and a very simple hookless chorus. Seems like it could have had some sort of bridge stuck in there somewhere. Back Door Man might not be a great song, but it's pretty damn good. It's gritty as hell and slightly lecherous. What more could you want in a blues song? Just my bitcoin's worth....

Good discussion. I would put The Doors' Top 25 up against any band's.

The Beach Boys deserved the graphic treatment, such as it was, but I don't feel anyone else does.

I've been trying to come up with a list, but I've been so busy that I haven't had a chance to reevaluate The Doors' music. I had a pretty big Doors phase my last couple years of college, but haven't listened to them a whole lot since then aside from a couple hits.

Whoa, I gotta get with it! The Doors really hooked me. I've been listening to them all week. I've got a few thoughts left on that discussion, then I'll return to my Beatles list. I probably won't finish it until next weekend, though.

Well it's clear from browsing other folk's lists (including yours, cl) that the "complete" online list I assembled mine from was anything but complete!! It did make for an interesting selection though.

When you make a top 100 Beatles Songs List - you realize how few bad songs they have! Honestly, I don't feel they made any bad songs. Many of them just aren't to my personal taste. I feel the same way about The Who and Led Zeppelin. As for the Beach Boys.....well there's a can of worms! Actually I can’t think of any truly bad Beatles songs either. I love or like pretty much all of them. In fact other than my top ten, the next 40 songs, can ulitimately topsy turvey based on my mood. Can’t think of too many Zepplin stinkers either, other than half of Coda. Not familiar enough with The Who to comment. The Beach Boys, however 🤣
