In September 1984, the Beach Boys released a collaborative single "East Meets West." It did not chart.
The B-side was a Four Seasons recording, and thus is not part of our rating. Please discuss and rate "East Meets West," by the Four Seasons and the Beach Boys.

Pardon me for not writing much about this one, but I don't know much about this one, and it isn't as well documented online (so far as I could see) as other of their material.
I know that I don't like it, though: 4.

I remember reading about this single when it came out. I tracked it down somewhere (I don't remember exactly where; it wasn't in the record stores), and I wanted to like it. I really wanted to like it. I don't know...
The record does have everything you would want in a song like this - great vocals from Frankie Valli and each Beach Boy, "competitive" lyrics (Four Seasons you better believe it!), psuedo-cheerleaders chanting or whatever, and they even snuck old Brian in there at the end. The song was written by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe. It sounds like a lot of time was devoted to the production. They injected a lot into this recording. Surprisingly, it sounds more like an 80's song than a throwback. And, in some ways, that's a drawback. It just doesn't quite work. Maybe it is those alternating themes/lyrics; it's not...fun. It doesn't feel fun.
I guess I was glad that everybody sounded good vocally, "youngish", and healthy. I didn't know where our group was going from here. I had no idea. Obviously this was a one-off, almost novelty record. And, I never listened to the B-side. I'm thinking about a 5, but because everybody's vocal was so good, I'm stretching to a 6. Brian, though energetic and sounding somewhat "clear", might've been the weakest of the bunch. Why do I want to drop to a 5? OK, a 5. I might listen to this song once every ten years...

I love "East Meets West", although I've always heard it as more of a Seasons thing. Great song though.
Eight? No, nine -- I'm feeling generous.

Beach Boy fan confession.
I've never listened to that until just now. I'd heard of it, I've read about it. But, just never bothered to listen to it. It is a little odd that this is another officially released BB song that somehow never made it to any of the various CD compilations and boxsets over the years. Not that it's a work of art, far from it, but to be honest, I'd rather have had it on MiC than some of the other songs I'd already bought several times over.
But.....I'm steering off course. This was not..good. I do agree that the vocals sound fine. But, that's really about the only redeemable quality I can find about this song.
I've going with a three.

Good point and that's been a pet peeve of mine. All of the boxed sets and comps and they couldn't find a CD/digital home for "East Meets West"! For a group as big as The Beach Boys this should've been taken care of years ago. Does anybody know if it's on any Four Seasons' CDs?

There's a few officially released odds and ends from the 80s and early 90s that somehow could crack either of two career spanning boxsets.

Keep in mind that this is not the Four Seasons but just Frankie Valli. I know that Bob wrote it but I don't think he sings on it does he? And the other two Four Seasons had long since left the group so it just Frankie Valli and there's no Four Seasons on this at all. Four seasons never recorded anything at all I don't think after Frankie went out solo with Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You. Better Scholars please comment if I'm wrong.
Don't be confused by the name Four Seasons because Frankie for 50 years that's just pick three random guys or some singers from that Broadway show and call them the Four Seasons but the last time the Four Seasons actually perform together it's probably sometime in 1968 I think but I'm not sure

It's easy to lose track after that!

Frankly, that group's background vocals are far down the list of things that I'm focusing on in liking/disliking this song.

"East Meets West" is an abomination.
(Already feeling a little guilty, so I'll round up to a '2'.)

That's a really harsh evaluation, but I can't agree with you or disagree with you because when I tried to listen to the song I had to turn it off after 10 seconds because it was an abomination. "East Meets West" is an abomination. (Already feeling a little guilty, so I'll round up to a '2'.)

So who recorded Who Loves You and December 1963? And what's with the billing "Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons"? Shouldn't that be "Frankie Valli and the Three Seasons"? I would say the 70's guys were as legit as 4 Seasons guys as Blondie and Ricky were legit Beach Boys.

Bob wrote those songs and he of course is one of the original members of The Four Seasons but I'm not sure if he plays keyboards on it or not. The only member of the Four Seasons I believe on those songs is Frankie Valli himself. Nick and Tommy are certainly not on those songs and I think, as has been posted up above ,they're not on any songs after 1965 so.... The only songs that can be properly designated as Four Seasons songs are those that contain the original four Jersey Boys. Everything else is just Frankie Valli with a backing band and a fake name. quote author=" lonelysummer" source="/post/30204/thread" timestamp="1641963901"]So who recorded Who Loves You and December 1963?
