I know who Pee Wee Herman was - I've seen clips, blips, and read articles - but I've never seen a complete movie or TV show. A quick question...I thought he rebounded after his "incident", though maybe never again reaching his previous popularity. I thought I remembered reading that a few celebrities came to his side and helped him with his comeback. Is that true? He never really struggled for work, but it was mostly small parts in movies, TV, and voice acting. But, he was never as popular as he was when he was playing Pee Wee Herman from 1985-91. He did eventually bring the character out of retirement for a Netflix movie in 2016 (I think). I really should check that out.

I thought I remembered reading that a few celebrities came to his side and helped him with his comeback. Is that true?He certainly kept working, but his profile dropped very dramatically. And he definitely had supporters all along. But he didn't ever really disappear. In fact, just a few months after the incident, he appeared at the MTV Music Awards with a now-classic line (check around the 1:20 mark). He kept working in movies and TV shows, mostly with other characters and under his own name (Paul Reubens), so Pee-Wee Herman was mostly gone until the Netflix film in 2016.

"Parky" was an institution in the UK. It seemed as though he'd go on for ever. Eighty-eight is a pretty good innings. Rest in peace, Sir Michael.

Man, just watch footage of the 1970 World Series. The Reds had a lineup full of great hitters, including Rose, Perez, Tolan and Bench, but nobody had any luck against Brooks! Pete Rose said Brooks "belongs in a higher league". IMO, the greatest third baseman of all time, and yes, a great man.

I just saw Matthew Perry, best known as Chandler on Friends, died at 54. Well, that's sad. It's getting a lot coverage, too. Friends was huge. Matthew Perry struggled most of his adult life with substance abuse and other issues. Maybe he was trying to address his health; it was reported that he returned from playing pickleball when he passed away at home.

Bobby Knight, the undeniably great and undeniably controversial coach, died after years of poor health. He was 83.
In college, I was lucky enough to cover the Gophers when he was coaching Indiana. I even got to see him abruptly end a postgame media session with a snarky remark over what he saw as a stupid question--thankfully not one of mine.
His was another era.

My thoughts or feelings about Bobby Knight were so diverse. On the basketball side, I admired the way he taught the fundamentals of the game, the commitment he demanded, and that he strove to make his players better students and better people.
Unfortunately, a lot of that admiration was obscured by the way Knight conducted himself off the court. I don't like people who are bullies, who are pompous and arrogant, and who are disrespectful to others. I don't care how good of a basketball coach he was or how many people he helped - if he can't show decency and respect to many others.

I agree entirely, and couldn't have said it better.

Dana Carvey announced a couple of days ago that his 32-year-old son, Dex Carvey, died of a drug overdose. I know only vaguely of Dex through things Dana has said about him: he was also a comic and a musician. But of course I've known Dana through his work since I was about 10 years old, from SNL to his own short-lived sketch show to his movies to his standup. Thirty-two years old.
