In my experience, hard core music fandom / geekdom seems to be a lot more male centric. I honestly think one of the mistakes I made when I'd meet girls in my 20s was talking too much about music. Just as a very small sample, my wife loves music, but she's not going to sit down with me and watch the Sea of Tranquility YT Channel, or a feature length music documentary. EDIT - Also, I used to attend record conventions where vendors sold records, tapes, CDs, memorabilia, as sometimes, bootlegs. The attendees were overwhelmingly male. Same goes for the record stores I used to frequent. Well kds, if you had met me then, I would have just ate up all that music talk! I guess I am one of those rare geeky girls who actually spent over $500 on a promo only 45 of Dennis Wilson and Rumbo’s Sound of Free/Lady. I just had to have it. My experience is that guys generally are the ones spending all their hard earned money on vinyl, cd's, etc, but girls are the ones that really listen when I am playing/singing a song.

I had no idea about Pet Sounds or Sunflower back then. I hate myself for that. I saw the most amazing man ever, Carl Wilson, perform in concert, and I didn’t even pay attention. Oh dear, as a late-comer to this board, I missed that story somehow. I hope you had the chance to see and appreciate Carl in concert. He was an amazing performer, singer, musician, and a wonderful person -- the real deal!

In my case, we're both music fans. I'm the one spending money on Beach Boys vinyl, CDs, and collectibles. My husband is collecting everybody else -- I'm not kidding. If he hears a song on a TV show he likes, he researches them and the next thing you know, their CD shows up at our house.

I love these posts because they're such good reminders that in many/most ways, what is statistically most typical is irrelevant: we're individuals, and we are/do/think/love whatever we are/do/think/love, regardless of demographic category.
Guys are more into geekdom and collectibles? OK, fine, maybe that's true on average. But Emdeeh has been a bigger fan for years, and both she and carllove are collectors; and me, I couldn't care less about collecting (though I love the music, obviously). It's all open to all of us.

I've said before that one of the reasons I geek out on music here is to spare my wife of it.

None of the women in my life have been Beach Boys fans to any extent. My older sisters were always more into the Beatles.
I've been married twice and neither wife was a big fan, although they supported me in my geeky fandom.
I was just beginning to get my last serious girlfriend into the Sunflower era music (she was completely in love with Dennis), but then we split up.
So my love of the music and moderate collecting has always been a solo journey, albeit with the support of the significant other (generally an "oh, I'm happy for you!" with a look the other way and an eye roll).

Oh dear. My wife, who was with me at my two BB concerts (one Brian, one Mike'n'Bruce) and enjoyed them both, once famously asked, "Who the fuck is Dennis Wilson?" I've had mockery from other quarters, but not from her, just the occasional enquiry.

I've had mockery from other quarters, but not from her, just the occasional enquiry. I should mention that my second wife was a little more sincere in her support of my love of Beach Boys music. I have told the story (I think it was over at EH, or maybe SSF) of the time she sought out some BBs 45s at a used record shop for a Christmas gift for me. She mentioned to the cashier what a fan I was, and he asked her if I knew a fella by the name of Bob Hanes who lived just across town. Long story short, the dozen or so records she got me were nice, but getting to know Coach Hanes was priceless. I do miss him.

My wife loves the classic era of The Beach Boys, but she's far less enthusiastic than me with their late 60s / early 70s material.

I very rarely mention specific posters unless I'm commenting on their posts, etc., but in this case I will say: I wish bellbottoms were still posting, as I'd love to hear her thoughts on this topic.
This means no disrespect to our female members (especially those who have posted here!), or various women I recall from other boards. But I would be curious to hear her (and yes, others') takes on this.

She was a fan from the start. Maybe some of the lurkers can chime in. Lord knows I was one for years.

Lord knows I was one for years. This is not entirely unrelated. I bumped into Jeanne Thornton and her book Summer Fun at Smiley. Ms Thornton is a self-confessed super fan of our Boys. See the excerpt linked on * this page*. And then there's this revealing * interview*...
