Sorry but I've got nothing but negative responses to this. I'm going to go into Grumpy Old Man territory and make a few points here:
1.) I have not had any interest in Rolling Stone Magazine since the late 1990s.
2.) I have no idea who any of the voters are. I really don't care what their musical tastes are.
3.) As others have mentioned, what da hell are "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Hey Ya" doing in the top ten? I know "Teen Spirit" was crazy popular, but it isn't even one of Nirvana's best songs. If I saw "Come as You Are" or "About a Girl" in the top 10, I could be more agreeable. As for "Hey Ya", it was cute and a little catchy when it first came out, but it got annoying fairly quickly.
4.) So you're tellin' me that all the songs from the past that either fell in the ranks or disappeared from the list completely are now inferior to these newer entries? I don't even know a lot of these songs.
5.) Why are they even bothering with a Top 500 Best Songs? (Oh, right...so RS can try to stay relevant.)

You can't get away from it.

So this song is #368 and Pearl Jam’s “Alive” is 417? I love me some grunge, but “Teen Spirit” is about the seventh best song, from the fifth best grunge band. No STP or Alice In Chains? Rolling Stone lost it’s way and it’s relevance about 20 years ago. Still, I thought it was at least heartening to see that The Beach Boys have not been totally forgotten.

My main thought whenever I see or hear "Black Hole Sun" is when, in fall 1994, I was in college in a music theory (ear training, actually) course. And the professor, who had a pretty heavy southern accent, used it as an example of a minor third. He'd hummed the interval, then the melody (which steps up), then inserted the words the third time around. It struck me as the funniest thing in the world, a "grown-up" (probably in his mid-40s at the time) using that reference.

I'll never really get why Nirvana and Pearl Jam seem to be so much more revered than AiC and Soundgarden. Especially Soundgarden who had Chris Cornell, far and away IMO the best singer to emerge from that scene.

Is "God Only Knows" becoming overrated? It's amazing what Paul McCartney's pronouncement, a few covers versions, and a few movie soundtracks can do for a song.
No, I don't think it is. I'm not trying to make a point here (about At My Piano), but I've probably listened to Brian's piano version about a half dozen times since it was released and I couldn't help but think, each and every time, how utterly beautiful "God Only Knows" is, musically. The melody and harmony are out-of-this-world. Perfection. I get it, though. In the context of this list, is it overrated relative to other Beach Boys songs? Well, I think I'd rather say those other ones are underrated. "God Only Knows" deserves its reputation as a timeless classic, as an all-time great. That it's praised and covered and placed in movies and such, well, kinda proves it. In other words, it's not an accident that it's lived on, that each new generation can (and does) connect with it. And now I am making a point about At My Piano (one that Kapitan may have already made, but that's OK) - I think listening to some of these songs in a new way might really be worthwhile for those of us who have heard the original (vocal) versions hundreds of times and may very well have started to tire of them or take them for granted to some extent. We hear it all the time from music fans, how they've heard the hits too many times. I think to strip away the prime vocals, and innovative production, and just hear the barebones of the music... as performed by the man himself late in life...I think the music, the melody and harmony, is going to prove itself all over again. I know for me, personally, the vocals of the Beach Boys have always been the main attraction. Who knows? Maybe this album will redirect my thinking a bit. ( Or not. I might be entirely underwhelmed by the album as a whole when I finally hear it.)

And that's kind of what prompted my comment, how "God Only Knows" leapfrogged over those other BB songs, and quite substantially. To your point (or my point) about how "God Only Knows" is frequently covered or appears in soundtracks...I'm not trying to dismiss "God Only Knows"'s greatness, but I think it's easier to cover, or more practical to cover, or less Beach Boy-ish to cover, which might be more attractive to other musicians/artists who don't want to...imitate...the old Beach Boys' style, or want to record something more serious lyrically. I mean, there's probably more musicians who would rather put "God Only Knows" on their album than "I Get Around", "Help Me, Rhonda" (2 #1 songs) or even "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations". That might apply to movie producers, too, unless the script calls for a more...fun song.

"God Only Knows" has joined the likes of "Yesterday," "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Hallelujah," etc., as a standard, that's all. It is the whole world's song, now, and something easier for artists to want to cover because it doesn't worry about cars or surfing or even necessarily boy-girl love. It can be taken so many ways it can be anyone's, and it is of course an absolutely beautiful song.
