B.E. had a great idea: not an alternate album, but an extra album. I wanted to make sure it didn't get lost in the big Feel Flows thread.
In the coming weeks (or, possibly, days), I think we all know what needs to happen: The construction of an addition album circa '69-71. Let's leave Sunflower, Surf's Up, and CATP intact (or not, up to you), but I think there's enough for a whole other album. "Susie Cincinnati", "Good Time", and "When Girls Get Together" are in play. (Don't expect mine imminently, I'm only about 1/3 of the way through the set!) I'm looking forward to it! It'll probably be a couple of days for me. Though who knows, if I go off on a Beach Boys bender today, it might put itself together...

I've begun this exercise. There really is a lot of (good) material to work with!

Yes, there is. Right now I'm debating whether or not to use some of the previously-released songs like "Susie Cincinnati", "Celebrate The News", and even "Break Away". But, they're on this boxed set and they didn't appear on any BB albums at the time.

I'm afraid of filling up almost the entire album with other previously released songs including "Lady", "Sound Of Free", "4th Of July", and "(Wouldn't It Ne Nice) To Live Again". That would bump a lot of other cool, newly-discovered stuff. This is gonna be a tough one.

There's no rule against it being a double album ... which, contrary to everything I've ever said and almost every fiber of my being, mine may well end up. It's looking like it so far.
And I must say, with the exception of Bob Dylan during the 1967 Basement Tapes era, is there another major act with not just a a nice cache of quality unreleased material, but a double-album's worth!?

I'm struggling on my approach to this. I began by lumping together songs whose flow I liked, maybe a shared theme or a nice contradiction; a good side opener or closer; and so on. But then I got so worried about "fit" that I was finding myself leaving obvously superior songs off just because I couldn't decide where to put them.
Now I am thinking I might just rank the songs I'm considering in tiers and worrying about the order and flow once the songs themselves are more or less decided.

Yeah, the issues you guys mention caused my first attempt to falter. I'm still undecided on which approach to take. If I'm imagining being tasked with assembling the best album circa 1970, then I'm going to go with a bulk of the previously released stuff which, uncoincidentally, are more fully produced tracks. But, if I'm even just partially putting this playlist together because I'm excited to listen to this set, then I'm going to want to include the newer stuff (to me). I'll wait to go into specifics, but this exercise kinda underscores to me that the Beach Boys largely did get it right (at some point along the way). IMO, it's not that there was a bunch of better stuff left sitting on the shelves, but a bunch of nearly as good stuff (if properly finished).

Been fiddling as I listen to potential candidates this afternoon, and I almost thought about pulling a Sheriff John Stone move: the singer gets his pay, hops an airplane, goes over the waves to San Miguel where he enjoys that (soulful old man) sunshine, eventually recalling those seasons in the sun... But I can't do it. Sorry, too forced!
What I'm really finding is that I've got about three sides' worth of music I want to include. I might just say screw it and do a three-sided album. I know it wouldn't have made any sense in 1971, but oh well.

I'm going to let this aspect of the thread run its course (a single "new" album), but then I have a Beach Boys' double album (a revamped Sunflower/Surf's Up set) to post.

Just got around to compiling all of the songs for consideration and have over 90 minutes of music. This could be tough without just copping out to a double album (which I'd still struggle putting in a good order).

My first stab at this as a single album is something like this. Everything is from Feel Flows unless otherwise noted.
The Beach Boys Old Man Sunshine (1971) Side One: 1. Soulful Old Man Sunshine 2. San Miguel 3. Big Sur 4. Medley: All of My Love/Ecology 5. Seasons in the Sun 6. (Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again (MiC)
Sido Two: 7. Break Away (1969 Single Mix) 8. Susie Cincinnati 9. Lady (Fallin' In Love) (1970 Mix) 10. Behold the Night 11. Sweet and Bitter 12. Good Time 13. Old Movie (Cuddle Up)

The Beach Boys - (Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again (using similar trickery to Surf's Up as to what people would expect) Side One: 1. Sound of Free 2. San Miguel 3. It's A New Day 4. Breakaway 5. Seasons in the Sun 6. Big Sur
Side Two 7. Soulful Old Man Sunshine 8. Two Can Play 9. I Just Got My Pay 10. Susie Cincinnati 11. Sweet and Bitter 12. Wouldn't It Be Nice (to Live Again) (MiC) 13. Won't You Tell Me
I managed to cut everything down to a reasonable album length. My final three cuts were Where is She, Behold the Night and Old Movie. I wanted to start the album with a feeling of wow, this is the Beach Boys?? I consider Breakaway the lead single and it gives the listener a familiar sound early on. I almost didn't include Seasons in the Sun since a lot of fans seem to not like it these days, but it was a smash hit just a few years later. Who knows what would have happened if the Boys released it back then. Side two begins with more traditional Beach Boys sounds, then I close out the album with three tracks to remind you the Beach Boys are no longer that band you remember from 1964. Won't You Tell Me is sort of a coda to the album and a goodbye to that sweet and gentle voice from Brian.
I think I may come up with a follow up album since there's so many good songs still left over.

I should add I would have included "Won't You Tell Me" and almost definitely "It's Natural" if they were finished, but I wanted my album to be something I could play and enjoy as it is--no imagination required. "It's Natural" is obviously, sadly not finished. (I would love to hear the remainder of the lyrics and melody, and to have a better lead vocal for it all.) And "Won't You Tell Me," while I really like it, I think the lead vocal is just not releasable.
