Another split opinion, so no vote. “Forever” gets a big ten from me, without question — Dennis’ masterpiece. “Cool, Cool Water” gets a seven from me, as a standalone song. I like it, it’s fun, with lush vocals. That's pretty much how I view/rate these songs. I'd even probably rate "Cool, Cool Water" a little higher depending on my mood. So, split the difference and you've got an '8.5'. If "Forever" were the A-side, I'd have no problem rounding up to a '9'. I absolutely think it's a masterpiece, that it sounds classic, epic, you name it. It doesn't just sound like a hit, but an all-timer. And, within the context of the Beach Boys, I think it's one of the last examples of them truly capturing the magic of the golden period on tape. Brian's falsetto is a big part of that, I think, so I'm surprised to see the criticism of it. To me, the song/recording fits right in with the hits of the 60s. The only reason (in my mind) it wasn't a hit was because the Beach Boys were not popular at the time of its release ( and it was the B-side of a highly uncommercial track). Now, as you might suspect, due to "Cool, Cool Water" being the A-side, I'm rounding down to an '8'.

Brian's falsetto is a big part of that, I think, so I'm surprised to see the criticism of it. I LOVE Brian's falsetto. It's the part itself, especially at the end. Just because I love the sound of his falsetto and many, many instances of it doesn't mean every part has to be praised (especially when it's irritating to me).
You know what I might like best about "Forever?" The acoustic guitar sound and part. Prominent, simple, and a great sound. I know that might sound stupid to say about a band where often we talk about complex vocal harmonies or gigantic arrangements, but I think it matters a lot.

I know exactly what you mean about that part at the end. For me it works really well, but I credit the mix and the timing of the fade. If you listen to the 'vocals only' version it's obviously more prominent, and exposed, and it goes on much longer. It's kinda cool hearing him go for that really high note, though! Anyway, I was more speaking to my surprise at a consensus of criticism that looking back isn't as numerous as I thought (perhaps it was the "over-the-top weazlings" descriptor that I recalled ). I totally agree with you about the acoustic guitar sound and part enhancing the track.
