I have to go back and listen to Wildflowers again. Over the years, I'd seen it climb the ranks of Petty's best albums. Granted, there's some good songs on it, but I can't recall ever being blown away by the album as a whole.
Although, Petty is one of those artists for whom I think a comprehensive compilation would suffice. I only bought Wildflowers back in the day because it was released just after his greatest hits album, and that was the only way to get You Wreck Me and It's Good to Be King. While it was a huge huge hit, I've always been rather indifferent to You Don't Know How It Feels.

I've actually never been a big Petty fan, which is why it blew me away that upon his death many, many people talked about him as the voice of a generation, one of the greatest artists. I just never got that. Not that I disliked him, either. He was perfectly good, wrote a bunch of good songs. But great? I don't know.
I don't own any Petty music. But I could see putting together some playlists of him, or getting a greatest hits comp.
Mostly I am curious about this to see whether Carl Wilson pops up any more!

I think that's just the typical kind of stuff you hear when a musician dies unexpectedly.
I thought his music was good overall, maybe bordering on great. I do have the one disc greatest hits album he released in 1993, as well as a few of the albums that came after. But, I've never really feel compelled to dive into deeper into his catalog (perhaps a thread idea).
Carl is supposedly on the song Honey Bee from Wildflowers, but I really can't hear him.

Tom Petty is probably in my top 5 favorite artists (after Lennon, McCartney, B. Wilson, and Dylan) so you can imagine what I think about him and the extent of my collection.

It seems there is at least one other song with Carl Wilson on the upcoming material: "Hung Up and Overdue."
Edit, to be clear, apparently this was on the "She's the One" soundtrack album, but there is a mix that includes Carl's harmonies. He said in 2017:

I hadn't seen that quote from Petty before, so thanks for that. I was kinda hoping for a remix which features Carl more prominently. Seems like we'll probably get it.

Here is another quote related to Carl from Petty, this from a 2017 Yahoo story apparently using material from an earlier (90s) New York Daily News interview.

I actually really like Room at the Top, but I'm definitely not getting a Carl vibe from Tom on it. But, their voices are pretty distinctly different.

I haven't checked the tracklists yet, but maybe there'll be a remix of "Honey Bee" with more Carl. I actually really like Room at the Top, but I'm definitely not getting a Carl vibe from Tom on it. But, their voices are pretty distinctly different. I agree. That's one of those quotes where I don't doubt the inspiration, but I can't hear it myself.

At 0:58, 2:07, and 3:40 Carl sings harmony with Tom. At 4:50 Carl sings wordless, Beach Boys-esque harmony. I could definitely see a remix/remaster enhancing that section.

That's one of those quotes where I don't doubt the inspiration, but I can't hear it myself. That ends up the case for me quite often when someone mentions the inspiration of a song or performance. Sometimes it's so obvious as to be painful (like Haim's "Summer Girl" last year, with Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wildside" as the obvious touchstone), but often they're head-scratchers for me. Then again, I have written songs that I hear explicitly as almost ripping off something, and others say--even after I've mentioned it--they don't hear it at all.

This news is a couple weeks old, but I hadn't seen it until this morning: Elvis Costello is releasing a new album, Hey Clockface, in late October. Some of it was recorded in Paris with longtime keyboardist-collaborator Steve Nieve and a French quartet comprising cello, percussion, trumpet/flugelhorn, and reeds; some in New York with Bill Frisell and Wilco's Nels Cline; and some in Helsinki, apparently solo.
I don't see much discussion of Costello here. Am I right in thinking there aren't (m)any fans of his around the board?

I like Elvis Costello, though I wouldn't say I'm anything approaching deeply knowledgeable about his works. I have enjoyed everything I've heard by him though. This Year's Model and Blood and Chocolate are both very enjoyable albums. He's definitely on my list of artists I've long intended to dive deeper into, but just never got around to it.

I came to him pretty late, and still never REALLY dug in. Other than casually having heard things like "Allison" and recognizing the glasses and hairdo, really the first time I listened to him was the 2004 album The Delivery Man ... which it turned out I just loved. Eventually I got maybe a dozen or so of his albums and do tend to like them.
But it's pretty hit and miss for me, I have to admit. Sometimes he seems too clever for his own good, overworking songs to the point of them being more impressive than enjoyable. Yet other times, I think he's just amazing.
I've often wondered if he mightn't have been better suited to be part of a duo, with someone to add some tension, to restrain him, to counter him.

Looks like I get to be the bearer of music news for once! Queen and Adam Lambert have announced that they'll be putting out a " Live Around the World" album in October, featuring recorded performances from various tours. While the likelihood of the show I attended last summer appearing on the release is not high, i'm still excited about this.
