"Mary's New Car" from Tom Petty's 1985 SOUTHERN ACCENTS album, with either Mike or Carl on lead. Just the type of song they needed to be doing in the 80s...but did not. I just went back to see whether anyone mentioned this one when we did a Petty thread, album by album, a while back. But I don't think anyone referenced the song at all! Interesting choice, Moon Dawg. I hadn't listened to it since the thread Kapitan is referring to, but the main hook "Mary's got a brand new car, Mary's got a brand new set of wheels" instantly comes to mind. That part is catchy, it gets stuck in your head. Relistening to the song, it's already got some nice background vocals in the Beach Boys style. Also, being a car song, of course, the general public might have dug the Beach Boys doing it. Anyway, being a huge Petty fan, I'd have loved to hear it. It also wouldn't have been a bad career move to associate with Petty, who was already in Dylan's circle, and before long all of the Wilburys. Petty probably would have appreciated and welcomed it, too.

I always liked this Lobo song. I could hear Mike or Bruce (yes, Bruce!) singing the lead. Then there's that high, falsetto part/note. If they could get Brian to nail that part just one time - maybe even use (cough) technology - then keeping repeating/looping the part when it comes up. Add some harmonies and Dave's guitar...

Yes I think Surfer Joe is a really weird song and something strange about the whole presentation of it. And it's kind of a novelty song almost
I don't think the Beach Boys ever would have touched it. So I was just throwing it out there.
I want to see The Beach Boys produced by Bruce do a song with the weekend and get a number one hit

I know that's a good way for a legacy artist to score a hit these days (ie. Elton John featuring Dua Lipa), but at what cost?

Our recent (and upcoming) SotW thread has included the Four Seasons, the Fat Boys, Little Richard, the Everly Bros, and Stars & Stripes was more collaborators than Beach Boys. Then we've got Sugar Ray belting "Do it!" and a handful of people on No Pier Pressure to mixed reviews...
They were all attempts at scoring hits. I don't recall seeing all that much from our board's members saying these were all great ideas, massive successes, etc.

I'd sooner just let sleeping dogs lie and have Summer's Gone remain their finale.
