Now if only Sebu will write a song about Brian's chair.
Maybe Sebu's band Capital Cities just isn't on my radar, but I do have a passing knowledge of what's going on in Top 40 (I can't call it total shit if I'm 100% unaware, right?). Is it my imagination, or have Capital Cities and Nate Ruess vanished from prominence since the release of NPP?

I was totally ignorant of Capital Cities to begin with, so I can't really help you there. I can confirm I haven't seen them mentioned, though. And I do at least scan some mainstream music outlets, as you know.
Nate Ruess, I think you're right. I believe Fun (.fun, fun., whatever) was already done before NPP and he was going to be a solo artist. I know he had an album, I think around that same time. I haven't heard anything of or from him since.

I remember they had a big hit around 2013 called "Safe and Sound." I think it's been used in car commercials, but I can't say I've heard anything from them since. They could be more of an underground thing that managed to crack to the pop charts. Nate had a few hits with fun, I think a solo hit or two, and a song with Pink before appearing on Brian's album. That's why I said then, and still say, Saturday Night was Brian's best chance at any kind of hit in 2015 (no, we'll bury it on the backend of the album).

Just started watching the most recent Pet Squares and see that Adam Marsland has an album coming out with Steve Kalinich, music set to a poem called "The Meaning." Marsland describes the music as in the vein of Smile or "psychedelic soundtracks from '70s cartoons."
I have to admit I haven't been the biggest fan of Kalinich's lyrics, but I'll certainly check it out when it's released.

Here is a new, brief feature on (and interview with) VDP and Veronica Valerio on their new album.
It's funny that they open with "Good Vibrations" and call it out as a tune that he was a key collaborator on, since his only alleged contribution (cello triplets) is disputed.
It's also funny that VDP says how her harp appealed to him. He was less complimentary of the harpwork of Joanna Newsom, whose Ys he did arrangements. "I feel the arrangements on Miss Newsom's CD were a pivotal advantage in relieving the monotony of constant harp arpeggiation." (He was complimentary of her talent and songwriting, I should be clear.)

Beached was an album I came across at a thrift store circa 1986. Had no idea who Ricci Martin was, so I don't know what prompted me to look on the back cover, but when I saw the musician credits, I had to get it. Gerry Beckley, Jimmy McCulloch, guys from Chicago, Billy Hinsche, Carl, Dennis. It's a good mellow album. If it has a weakness, it's Ricci's vocals. Imagine if it was Carl singing those songs! Stop, Look Around, Moonbeams, Spark of Me....those are the ones that stand out to me. Well produced album.

When I was listening to it, several of the songs sounded to me like he was imitating Carl ... although not very well. I thought overall it was an OK album, but a bit boring after a while. You said "good mellow," but I'd say "mellow to a fault." It isn't terrible or anything, but mediocre.

I've discovered something for myself that the more plugged-in of the world probably already knew. But anyway...
Scott Bennett, a key musician and collaborator for Brian Wilson from 1998 until his 2016 rape charges, obviously has not had a high profile since being released from prison. However...
In spring 2020, Todd Sucherman, occasional BW Band drummer and husband to former BW Band singer Taylor Mills, released a solo album. (That alone deserves mention in this thread. This will get you to the songs on YouTube.) J.K. Harrison was a cowriter of every song, played most of the instruments, coproduced, coengineered, and comixed. Quite a talented fellow, that Mr. Harrison.
Well, here is a page through which musicians can hire Mr. Harrison to write or perform music for them. If you somehow miss the header image and credits, you may find one of the comments informative.
Even if you hadn't clicked any links yet, I trust you have figured it out: Scott Bennett is now J.K. Harrison, and he is working again. Google being what it is, I suppose it makes sense that if he is going to make a living making music, using his own name is not helpful.

Wow, good catch. This is a sensitive subject and I'm not about to judge whether changing his name is the way to go. But, the way Scott Bennett/J.K. Harrison has his website set up - with his picture, mini-resume', quotes from fellow musicians, and several comments below that refer to him as "Scott", well, is he really accomplishing anything with the name change.

My guess is that he changed the page after initially setting it up under his previous name, and that the comments were posted prior to that.
But it still could be a way to make the first impression not be the rape conviction, but the music. If somebody who wasn't aware of him personally finds that page, hears his work, sees the credits, they'd be impressed. Maybe even hire him. And then, yes, probably somewhere along the line someone inquisitive is going to figure it out, but the idea would be that by then they've made up their mind about him. Someone googling "Scott Bennett" would be different, already knowing the story.

Speaking of both Sucherman's album and Harrison, this review says "the MVP of the album is unquestionably J.K. Harrison."

I was wondering how you found out about Bennett/Harrison. I'm glad I kept scrolling!
Does Taylor Mills sing on the album?

I realize this is teetering on the brink of this topic but it shouldn't go unmentioned. It's Jack Rieley and Machiel Botman's 1975 album Western Justice. SMILE-Holland has contributed an entire thread to the album at EH, including priceless translations of Dutch magazine articles ( here). Here is the entire album for your listening pleasure: Western Justice. At least give the magnificent opening track a listen...
