In addition to this forum, I sometimes frequent a Baltimore Orioles blog which has a very active comments section. And the subjects vary and include more than just Orioles baseball. Sometimes, music will come up. Occasionally, I'll read a comment that makes me pause a little, but yesterday, I read one that might not be the craziest music comment I've ever read, but it's up there.
Somebody brought up Metallica's James Hetfield's birthday. For whatever reason, Metallica tends to attract a good share of "derpage" on the internet. Yesterday was no different. It started with the usual "Metallica hasn't really been heavy metal since the 80s." OK, that's dumb, but just an opinion from somebody that apparently thinks thrash is the only kind of metal. But, then somebody agreed with the following comment, and I quote....
"Metallica started as metal in the 80s, then invented hard rock in the 90s."
......................................................
Let that sink in for a second.
At first, I though the guy meant that Metallica re-invented themselves as hard rock in the 90s, but no, this guy was convinced that hard rock did not exist until Metallica went hard rock. Not, The Who, Cream, Hendrix, Purple, Zeppelin, Heap........Metallica. I think you can debate that maybe the band went more into a hard rock direction (even if I 100% disagree), to say they invented it was one of the more absurd things I've ever read online.
Anyone else care to share something crazy they've seen on various boards, social media flatforms, etc?

That is hilarious. I'm trying to imagine in what way that person might be right--you know, the grain of truth, the point of view where that makes sense. But I honestly can't find such a grain. I'm sorry, Anonymous Internet Poster, but in no way, shape, or form did Metallica invent hard rock music in the '90s (or any other time).
The closest I can get is, they brought heavier music to wider popularity with their s/t "black" album than had been done.
I need to think of some examples to share. Nothing jumps out at me.

I suspect that most fans who come in with their "Metallica went hard rock in the 90s" have little to no knowledge of any heavy metal that predated Metallica. Not every song is going to be fast and heavy. Sabbath, Priest, Saxon, Maiden, etc all had wider ranges of songs. I think it's fair to say that they went away from thrash. But, they've always been a metal band. So, while "they went hard rock" is a flawed statement, I can kind of see the logic.

Yeah, like you, I don't even agree with their premise that they left metal to become hard rock. They just left their previous kind of metal (uber-heavy thrash juxtaposed with remarkably sophisticated classical-influenced instrumental sections) for a more commercial, simpler, melodic kind of metal.
It was hard rock in a sense of the term, I guess, but usually when people say hard rock they mean something based on rock and roll (which is to say probably a blues influence, a little swing to it) but harder; Metallica didn't do blues and didn't swing! They weren't ever rock and roll except in the big-tent sense of "popular guitar-based music."

I just love the damning reviews of the US crunkcore band BrokeNCYDE:
A writer for the Warsaw Business Journal attempted to describe their music: "Imagine an impassioned triceratops mating with a steam turbine, while off to the side Daft Punk and the Bee Gees beat each other to death with skillets and spatulas. Imagine the sound that would make. Just try. BrokeNCYDE is kind of like that, except it also makes you want to jab your thumbs into your eyeballs and gargle acid."
The New Musical Express stated in a review of their album I'm Not a Fan, But the Kids Like It!, that "even if I caught Prince Harry and Gary Glitter adorned in Nazi regalia defecating through my grandmother’s letterbox I would still consider making them listen to this album too severe a punishment."

Damning words ... but I listened to about 20 seconds of that music, and frankly, it's worthy of them. What a terrible band.
Also, crunkcore? Why must everything be -core or -gaze? It's like how every scandal has to end in -gate. I don't like it!

While I generally couldn't possibly care less what critics have to say about music, that's really, really funny.

The old saying usually goes "you can't judge a book by its cover." Well, in the cases of bands, sometimes you can.

I'm bumping this old thread. Much like my original post, I'm mining an Orioles blog comments section for a music comment.
Now, that comments section is full of "hot takes" on all sorts of subjects. But, I won't include personal taste as a "craziest" comment. But, when you try say crazy things to validate your personal taste, then it qualifies.
Somehow a few days ago, the discussion come up of greatest bands from both the US and the UK. The first post on UK bands mentioned The Who in the Top Ten. One poster chimed in.
(Poster) - I wouldn't include The Who. Their music didn't age well.
Ever curious, I had to reply.
KDS - I have to say, that's a take I've never seen about The Who.
(Poster) - Come on, Pinball Wizard.
KDS - Great song. Still is in 2022.
(Poster) - Horrible.
That's basically where the exchange ended.
But, considering he/she did not elaborate on the original point of The Who's music "not aging well." I can only assume that the poster is just not a fan of The Who. But, decided to put up some weird post to try to validate that opinion.

To suggest that my second favorite band's vast output is "not aging well"....my mind is reeling! I think I would have responded to this poster with quite the tirade. Oh, perhaps there may be one or two early obscure tracks that would get odd looks from my kids or anyone their age....but Pinball Wizard? A song covered by the likes of Sir Elton John and the Smithereens, and I'm sure other notable performers? Piffle! So bottom line, you have cited a winner for craziest comment. I've read some ridiculous opinions over the years, but that one takes the cake.

I was tempted to egg the posted on further, but he/she didn't seem to be interested. I think they realized that were called out on their bullshit and let it be.

This sports forum is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to silly takes.
"Depeche Mode are the most influential band of all time, second only to The Beatles."

Really stupid comment from a fellow music: "we're a rock and roll band, we're not gonna be playing any songs by Perry Como or Rick Nelson".
Hmm...i wouldn't have put those two names together. But I'd like to hear Perry's version of "Believe What You Say" or "Milkcow Blues".

Well, I love me some Depeche Mode, but Wow, that’s quite a stretch! Was there any elaboration as to why they felt that way? I’d be curious to know their line of reasoning.

He said that DM was a heavy influence on GNR, Coldplay, and most electronic music. While that might be true, there's just no way they are the 2nd most influential band ever.
