A local year-end list reminded me I'd meant to check out J.S. Ondara. And it was a welcome reminder. This Kenyan-born Minneapolitan has been getting critical acclaim this past year or so, and I think it's warranted. He plays an Americana style of music and sings with a penetrating tenor voice.

As I was compiling my year-end playlist, two songs kept sticking in my head.
First, Harry Nilsson's cover of Jimmy Webb's "What Does a Woman See in a Man?" which sounds like something out of a Rogers & Hammerstein musical. It's so, so Harry, it's almost sad that Webb wrote it. While Nilsson's voice couldn't ever approach what it had once been, I really like his performance here.
And then another retro sounding tune, though of a totally different type: the Regrettes' "I Dare You," a kind of girl-group early rock sound through modern almost punky filters. (But way too clean, way too produced to be punk.) It's also got a fun video.

As an antidote to my previous post , my late-night/early-morning listen since yesterday has been this wonderful live performance by Pierre Hantaï, the harpsichordist recommended to me by my "music friend" across the road and now a firm favourite of mine. It includes works by Antonio de Cabezón, Domenico Scarlatti and Carlos Seixas: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Hantaï

Winter blues comin’ in hard and fast, trying to push them away with uplifting, cheerful tunes, which the Mavericks have a lot of. This is my favourite by them, on repeat the last few days.

Sorry to hear that, bb. Five years ago I fell for a telephone scam, just before Christmas of all times. It took three awful months to get them off my back. It's funny how shit like that affects one's listening habits. I turned to tracks lasting hours by Bull of Heaven, stuff I find thoroughly unlistenable these days. My main solace came from discovering the catalogue of Adam Marsland. I listened to all the wonderful tracks in this list... www.adammarsland.com/adamatoz.html...and later bought one of his albums as a token of gratitude. And I became obsessed with "The Captain Of Her Heart" by Double, which I still think is a great song:

It sounded so cool on the radio back in the day (1986). I always thought it had sort of a Beach Boys circa 1971-72 feel to it.

Nice blast from the past - thanks for sharing, jk. EDIT: woops, got my wires crossed there, clearly Captain of Her Heart is not by Mr. Marsland.

Adam Marsland has strong connections with the Beach Boys, most notably David Marks, whom he recently produced. His live repertoire with the Chaos Band includes (if the band is still going strong) dozens of covers of songs by the BB, Dennis, Elton John, Big Star and many others. This is Elton's "Burn Down The Mission", featuring Evie Sands on lead vocal and AM on keys: www.adammarsland.com/covers.html

There is some really nice stuff there! And yeah a lot of Beach Boys’ influence and homage. I really love this one: The other one that jumped out at me is more of a rock song - I Can’t Do This Anymore. Wow, what a great tune. He kind of reminds me of 90s pop/rocker Matthew Sweet a little bit in that one.

We exchanged a PM or two at one time. If I'd started delving into his music a little earlier I could have caught him in Amsterdam. Ah well. I love all his background information to each song--he's a born raconteur! I know the name Matthew Sweet but not the music. Which one album of his (my golden rule these days) would you recommend, bb?

Girlfriend is Matthew Sweet’s most popular and acclaimed album, so I suppose I’m behooved to recommend that one. I like it - there are some really good songs on there, lots of lovelorn loneliness and longing. The title track, as well as I’ve Been Waiting, are permanently etched into my teens/twenties. Winona and Thought I Knew You are other standouts for me. But I must warn you, it’s very 90s sounding and it goes on a bit at times. However, my favourite Matthew Sweet song is Where You Get Love, from his Blue Sky on Mars album, so that’s the clip I’m linking.

Not out of any aversion to the '90s music on Girlfriend, more because "WYGL" sounds rather good. Thanks for filling me in, bb.

Sweet also is relevant to this board in that he was a participant in the early 00s Brian Wilson Tribute show.

Nice! I hadn't seen these, thanks for sharing. Pretty good cover of Sail On, Sailor, sung in two very different styles. Darius' voice actually suits the song quite well (not that Matthew did a poor job, I thought he was pretty good too).
