Other than Rumours, I don't think I've listened to any other Mac albums. I have a good compilation of the Peter Green era and a two disc comp of the Buckingham / Nicks era. Maybe that's a catalog for me to explore once I'm out of Christmas mode.

But I think it's almost always worthwhile to explore the greater catalogs of the legendary groups at least once. I wish I made more time for it. But I'm mostly happy just relistening to my favorite artists. I mean, my top 5-10 probably have 150-200 albums between them (easy).

I am not as good about it as I used to be--as life goes on, a combination of less time AND less motivation at any given time really add up--but I think it's good. And honestly not just with music. I think whatever your interests (and sometimes even broad categories of interest themselves) are worth at least giving a cursory review. A sort of Western Civilization/Culture survey course of your own: great authors or books; great musicians, whether pop, jazz, classical, or anything else; great movies; great plays; and so on. There isn't enough time for it all, but expanding oneself through culture is, I truly and deeply believe, almost incalculably valuable.

But, Spotify had given me the chance to explore some catalogs that I wouldn't have been able to do before without a financial commitment. But even with a whole world of music at my fingertips, I always find my way back to my primary favorites.

Well, it's that day again. This is dedicated to my late pen pal who initiated me into the music of U2 all those years ago. A Happy New Year to all who see this.

I guess I should've put this one up last night, but close enough.

Now and again I come across a song whose groove bludgeons its way into my brain. I heard one the other day, during the Dutch radio Top 2000 we get saddled with between Christmas and the New Year. I'm not at all familiar with Genesis' later work (except that walking song) so "Mama" took me utterly by surprise:
Another that come immediately to mind is John Lennon's "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier". It always feels to me as if it requires a herculean effort to drag the whole chugging proceedings from A to D and back:
My third choice is my favourite in the steamroller department. The S.O.S. Band's association with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis yielded several masterpieces, not least "Just Be Good To Me". I feel a little sorry for the guitarist who bravely takes a solo but gets smothered in the sonic onslaught:

I've been on a 1960s greatest hits kick lately, and while I've been off work the last two weeks sitting at home, I've been plugging in comps like The Hollies Greatest Hits, The Turtles 20 Greatest Hits, Ultimate Kinks, etc.
Then I went to my sister's for the Christmas day family dinner, and she was streaming hits of The Monkees while we all helped out in the kitchen. That made me realize I have no Monkees in my CD collection. Once I got home I got online and searched out the Then & Now comp, which seems to have the best selection. I ordered it through Discogs since all the Amazon venders are charging too much for it.
Now I'm waiting for delivery.....

Hoyt Axton was just a funny name to me until today. A friend sent me their take on Axton’s own version of his song "The Pusher", made famous by Steppenwolf in the film Easy Rider. So I looked up the original and goodness, what a voice that man had!

Today marks the birthday of our little dog, who slipped away peacefully in his basket two years ago. This joyous sound was the UK #1 on the day he was born:

According to my brother, who saw Jeff in concert on three occasions, there were two categories of guitarists, Jeff Beck and "the rest". He was, quite simply, on another level:

I was just thinking how we were more or less trashing Sam Smith for their Grammy performance recently. And frankly I stand behind all criticism. But I was just thinking about their better work. This is a great one, in my opinion.

I was thinking I could not be more tired of and bored with discussion of a song, could not be more sick of a narrative. But then I saw Lizzo covered it and got press for it (let me guess: brave? Heroic?), and had to give the universe kudos. A new rock bottom. I don't want to tempt fate to top that one.

I actually thought music hit rock bottom several years ago when Miley Cyrus released some dreck called Baby Talk. But, damned if the music world hasn't proved me wrong several times over. Speaking of Lizzo, she's guesting on an upcoming episode of The Simpsons, and that episode is being particularly hyped. Back in The Simpsons's hey day, which was a long, long time ago, guest stars pretty much either did cameos (if they were playing themselves) or played new characters. Now, they've sometimes built whole episodes around a guest star. One of the worst episodes of the last decade had a storyline based around Lady GaGa coming to Springfield. I imagine this Lizzo appearance will be more of the same, but way worse.
