Maybe I spent too much time on the wrong forums too. Which is odd, you'd think Brianistas would be all over it. Edit: Am I the only one who hears the incredible joy with which Brian sings on Beach Boys' Party. (Ah! Looky there, my other choice for most underrated.) The problem with those early gems is that many of them are cowritten by the mean old man with the baseball cap. Brianistas don't like that guy. As for Party, the album works if I'm in a certain mood.

Not to get off track, but let me just say how bizarre that is to me. Whatever Mike said or did decades later has very little (if anything) to do with the music, or even who he was as a person, decades earlier. It's not odd for a fan to say, "I'm a fan of the group through x album or x year." It's just as easy to do that with a member of the band.

I have another theory why the earlier albums aren't more significantly higher-rated than the later post-1968 ones. I know my theory doesn't make sense, it isn't logical, anyway...
Why would anyone choose later Beach Boys' albums over the earlier ones? The 1963-68 albums are full of Brian Wilson classics. In my opinion, those songs will overwhelmingly receive higher rankings/ratings over the/his later music. Who or what could possibly compete with that? Well, maybe Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, and Bruce Johnston. Oh, and some later Brian Wilson, too. It's not that people got tired of the earlier music; they didn't change so much their listening preferences of music. It wasn't anything...wrong...with the early music. It's not that the later albums were necessarily better. Maybe it was an openness for something different, for OTHER Beach Boys other than solely Brian Wilson (and Mike Love). It was a welcoming of Dennis, Carl, Al and Bruce - their voices, their songs, their personalities.

That reminds me of something that isn't often mentioned, but, as big of a Dennis fan as I am, I value his voice in Brian's early-mid '60s vocal stacks more than his leads circa '68-72.

I was going along nicely, almost completely agreeing, then I came to:
Most overrated song: Can't Wait Too Long
Ooh. That's maybe, no probably, my favorite unreleased BB song (in the sense that it didn't appear on an original album). I like every version; there's three or four out there I think. One last gasp of Brian's genius. Stunningly hypnotic music that only Brian Wilson could create. I can't believe it was never completed and released on Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, or even 20/20.

If it had been completed in the '60s-early '70s, then it most likely wouldn't have made my list. I like it quite a bit, but its unfinished/fragmented state lessens it greatly for me. I just can't get to genius or (near) masterpiece. To me, it's just cool. (Nothing wrong with that!)
Wasn't it considered for KTSA? That would have been odd, and most likely disappointing, but interesting.

Most underrated song: We'll Run Away, I'm Bugged At My Ol' ManI'm curious, in what way do you think it deserves to be rated higher? As serious work? For its humor? Musically, lyrically? Just curious. I like it, too. Obviously a joke/novelty song, but that doesn't make it worthless by any means. (See: Weird Al Yankovic's career!)

I enjoy it greatly for what it is, but I get the sense that there's very little appreciation for it among fans. I'd say it's ignored, but it's often mentioned for one reason - bringing down SDSN. I suppose it's worth noting that the backstory/context is interesting, considering their personal and professional relationship with their father and then-recent events. I think that enhances the song a bit, but it needn't. Edit: Kapitan, to answer your question a little better, I really enjoy Brian's vocal performance. Also, that it's the 3 brothers singing together, serves the song well.

Yes it does "bring down SDSN", but due to the length of the album (I know, here we go again), it didn't necessarily have to be replaced. There was plenty of room for other tracks to be added on to strengthen the album.

Most overrated song: Baby Blue After "Good Timin", it's my favorite song on the album. What don't you like about it? I don't have a good answer other than I find it really boring. Same goes for Full Sail and Goin' South. Those three along with Here Comes the Night and Shortenin' Bread make it really tough to listen to the album all the way through.

First, no Brian. Second, too many slow, borderline boring songs.

It seems I'm in the minority (again), but I very much like the yacht rock sounds of the LA album.
