Speaking of my aversion to home improvement projects, today, instead of doing any of an assortment I ought to do, I hope to waste the day as fully as possible. See, it's the final cooler day before a hot streak hits, and the Gophers host Bowling Green at 11 this morning.
Feeling like the perfect autumn day ahead, I'm making chili and garlic toast for the game. By mid-afternoon I'll be full, hopefully happy from a win, and probably ready for a nap. Yes, a trip to the grocery store this morning may well be the most ambitious undertaking of the day.

I hate wasting money on things I can do myself - so here I am torturing myself!
Had to get up early anyway to bid on an eBay auction. It was an item from Great Britain and I swear earlier this week, when I placed my first bid, it was in dollars, with the amount converted to pounds. So half asleep, I placed my bid and it took about 30 seconds to realize I had bid in pounds, when I noticed I was still the high bidder. I ended up winning the auction. I guess I’m happy - even if I spent way more than I planned . Had I paid to have the deck stained I wouldn’t be able to buy stupid stuff on eBay!
The Chiefs don’t play until tomorrow, but we are having wings today anyway, since my husband’s so love’s them. Company arrives in 6 hours! Can’t wait until today is over.

It won't get much better weather-wise in eastern/central Pennsylvania than today. Sunny and 72. No wind. The only slightly depressing thing is that I'll probably spend some time today cutting back perennials, the same perennials it seems I was just watering a few weeks ago. Oh, well, seasons change...

I hate wasting money on things I can do myself - so here I am torturing myself! That's how my family in general has always been. And what's funny is, I am that way about food. I've learned to make so many things from scratch because I think, "I'm not paying $4.99 for a little jar of [whatever]!"
But when it comes to home improvement, I'm always afraid I'll burn the house down, electrocute myself, or otherwise do something wrong. Luckily I have a great friend who is REALLY good at those things, so often I'll buy him a nice bottle of bourbon or something and he gives me a hand.
And by "gives me a hand," I really mean mostly "does it for me while I bother him with chatter."

It was a picture perfect day. Around 75 and sunny. We did some cleaning. And I grilled steak for dinner.
I'm currently on the deck. Its 63 and comfortable. I'm working to finish my last bottle of gin before I switch to whiskey next weekend. I always prefer to drink bourbon in the cooler months and rum in the warmer months, although the year, I really got into gin.

Yesterday was originally the day my daughter was to get married in my backyard. It was 72 and sunny with no wind at the time the ceremony was to take place. It would have been the perfect wedding weather. The wedding got moved to next June because of her school schedule. Hopefully we get just as lucky with the weather June 4!
Now, just as everything was starting to feel fall like, the forecast is a high of 90 today and 91 tomorrow. One last burst Summer. Go Chiefs!

Today begins our week of abnormally warm temps, at least as of the forecast right now: high 70s and low 80s every day in the near future. (Is there a new term for that? We would've always called it "Indian summer" when I was growing up, but I assume that's no longer an acceptable term.)
I'm off to a brunch with a few friends to send off a friend who's moving down south in a couple of days.
I should be home in time for the Vikings game ... but really, do I care!? Dalvin Cook is apparently going to miss the game, making this season's awful start that much more likely to get worse. Odds are I'll check in, see how it's going, and make the decision whether to stick it out. After yesterday's Gophers debacle, though, I haven't got much patience. I'm still steamed about that travesty.

We might hit 80 for a day or two during the work week, but temps should be back to highs in the low 70s for the weekend.

My wife took my son out today to run some errands with my mother in law.
Since I had the day, I decided to put up the Halloween stuff. I'm usually a "wait 'til October guy," but that's only a couple days away, and I might not have time next weekend.
It struck me that today would be the last time in 2021 that my living room would be undecorated. After Halloween, I have a few Thanksgiving things I put up. And I do usually start putting up Christmas stuff in mid November since we usually go out of town the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving weekend is always busy. The last quarter of the calendar year flies by even faster than summer.

It seems you're not the only one thinking about this. Since this past weekend, I have noticed dozens of nearby yards decorated with Halloween stuff: skeletons, tombstones, witches and broomsticks, etc. Gotta be honest, I think a lot of it seems way over the top--especially more than a month early, but regardless.
That said, they're not my yards...and it's better than political yard signs.

This probably won't make much sense, but here goes: I think the thing I dislike about the decorations is that they are so cookie-cutter. These big scenes people lay out in their yards, it isn't especially creative. It's just a bunch of stuff purchased at Target or WalMart that's ready to set up. I think if I'd seen these things 25 years ago, when (at least from what I recall) there wasn't so much readily available material, I'd think "oh clever!" or "funny!" or whatever.
Now I just think "oh, you went to Target and set up the kit you bought..."

I get that. But, in general, I don't have a problem with it. At worst, it's predictable. At best, they're participating in a fun holiday, and if they're adding a sense of macabre all the better (See: KDS's Get Off My Lawn rant about the over sanitization of Halloween from last year).
Back when we were growing up, our parents were a little more resourceful. But, I also think families have less time to devote to making homemade tombstones and such.
But, I'll admit, I miss the old ghosts made out of white sheet, covering a basketball. You never see those anymore.

On the topic of Fall, this past weekend, I abstained from beer for the first time in probably six months.
I'm a pretty well rounded drinker. I like whiskey, wine, rum, brandy, gin, and even occasionally vodka (for mixing) or tequila. But, beer is my favorite. Which is unfortunate, because the calories in beer really add up, especially if it's a grilling day where I might drink my first beer around 4pm, and put away 8-10 from the afternoon into the night.
But, since warm weather and beer drinking go hand in hand for me, I've decided to limit my beer intake to every other weekend. So, that means, Saturday night will be a beer day, and my first taste of Marzens, probably my favorite seasonal beer flavor.
