Thank you. This did occur pretty close to the school my wife taught at prior to COVID, but we didn't know anyone involved.

Yesterday evening I was sitting out on my patio reading, and my neighbours were playing a Beach Boys greatest hits comp! No idea which neighbours, as all the back yards share a cluster of fences. But it's nice to know that someone else in the neighbourhood is at least a casual fan

This one's a coronavirus thread post, a day drinking thread post, a thankfulness thread post, and a lounge thread post. But rather than spread it around...
I've been, and am currently, in Rochester, as my dad is at Mayo for still-more health issues. It has been quite a year. I'll spare you the details, but suffice to say the thankfulness part is that his heart hasn't stopped and required a shock back to life since Sunday evening. Surgery is probably forthcoming, but some of the past year's worth of issues make the decision harder than it would be otherwise.
The coronavirus part is that only one person is actually allowed in the hospital, per patient. (That person, naturally, is my mom, his wife.) And that isn't at a time, but total. Once she was it, she is it. So I'm here but unable to visit him directly. I'm trying to make myself useful by finding the place to stay, cooking, being company and support, etc., for my mom. But it's still a feeling of both helplessness and uselessness.
The day drinking part is that I'd like to be day drinking due to the above. But I'm trying to be productive with work, actually. (Thankfulness again: remote work having been normalized makes it irrelevant to my employer from where I'm working. And that I have the ability to rent a place here for my mom, and then be here to work from it.)
So that's this week...

Sorry to hear about your tough week, Kap. I hope your dad's health stabilizes and that if he has the surgery it goes smoothly. Even if you feel helpless, you are helping by being there for your mom, and indirectly I'm sure that helps your dad too.

Quite a dramatic evening: we had a strong thunderstorm with tornadoes on its leading edge roll through the area last night. On my edge of town, we just got a brief, strong storm with some hail. Other parts of the city had far worse: apparently thousands lost power, and there were downed trees, power lines, etc., both from tornadoes and straight-line winds.

Here is Baltimore, the sun set at 8pm EDT. So, tonight was the last sunset at 8pm or later until next May.

Being a bit farther north, we have a bit more sunshine (in summer; and darkness in winter). Our sunset is still around 8:15. However, the days are noticeably shortening. For me it's in morning when I notice. We're as late as 6:15 sunrise now.
One thing that occurred to me, though: if we're still in a remote work environment (which it seems my company will be) in winter, I'll at least have a better opportunity to enjoy the brief sunshine we get. In normal times, it's dark when I drive to work around 6-6:30 and it's getting dark by the time I leave around 4; in the interim, I am in an office with no external windows and so only indirect views of natural light.
By being home, I'll at least cut out the dark commute and will see the light more clearly.

I noticed today that the liquor store coolers and shelves are full of oktoberfests and marzens. In mid/late August.
As KDS and others have pointed out before many times regarding holiday branding, we have gotten to the point where we look forward to seasons from so long in advance that we're sick of them before they ever arrive.

It's not unusual for us to get summer like weather even into early October, especially in recent years. So, it's a little annoying that if I want to pick up a sixer of a summer seasonal, they can be hard to come by in mid to late September. I love marzens, and they might even be my favorite kind of beer, but I want at least a chill in the air first. Times goes by fast enough, without seeing fall beers, pumpkin coffees, and orange and brown decor in shops in mid August.

I have to admit, I picked up a 12-pack of the Summit Oktoberfest branded marzen...they're also definitely among my favorites. But yeah, it would be better to have it when it's 60, 65 on an October day than the 85 or whatever it is today.

Not technically a seasonal, but they sell more in summer, probably to make room to the marzens and pumpkin ales. So, I jumped on that.

Well then, it stays as is haha - you with your neighbors & me with mine.😁 Even them playing BBs means zero, it could be just exception to the rule (which is, as you say, horrible stuff).
