That was a (UK)#1? I don't think I've ever heard it before, which I suppose makes sense because when I read that wiki entry, it seems it wasn't a single in the US at all.
The only Frankie Goes to Hollywood song I ever recall having heard was "Relax," which did somehow get quite a lot of airplay even as it was being "banned" and criticized for its oh-so-shocking lyrics (which I never understood the controversy over anyway, having been 7-8 years old...).
That whole business is hilarious. A decade before banning "Relax" from its airwaves for its use of the word "come" (cum?), the prim-and-proper BBC blithely played Lou Reed's "Walk On the Wild Side" day and night: "But she never lost her head / Even when she was giving head"). Clearly no one of authority there had a clue what "giving head" meant. Oddly enough, I recently spotted a TV commercial for a family vacation resort--I think it may have been in Florida?--and what was playing but "Walk on the Wild Side"!! It was very strange watching clips of kids and their parents cavorting around a pool to the tune of a song about....prostitution!

On the subject of commercials, I was surprised to hear, in this one for Invictus (an eau de toilette for men) by Paco Rabanne, a snatch of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" (as sampled in what transpires to be a Kanye West song, "Power"): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_(Kanye_West_song)

I was at the local Weis the other day, the same one that used to play kick ass classic rock all the day.
When I walked in, I was greeted by Wizzard's I Wish It Could be Christmas Every Day.
Later on, at another store, I heard a familiar more recent song. Finally It's Christmas. It wasn't Mike's version, but Hanson I guess.

Do we not have a dedicated Beach Boys thread for this sort of thing?
Anyway, I spent nearly 4 hours shoveling snow yesterday and without a doubt the highlight was hearing the Spanish version of "Kokomo" come on SiriusXm while I'm out in a snow storm!

After a brunch at an amazing southern (especially fried chicken) place in town, a friend and I went to a bar/restaurant/bowling alley near my house for a couple of beers to catch up a bit more.
I don't know what service or station they had playing, but in addition to some cool but not shocking music like Bowie's "Sound + Vision," I heard two things I've only ever heard in a bar before when the bartenders let me pick music. (God bless my 20s...) They were:

I was in a large supermarket/"box store" last weekend and what I heard over the sound system was a song that I was certainly not surprised to hear, but surprised to hear as presented. It was the 1966 hit "Good Lovin'" by the Young Rascals, but it was only one channel of the stereo version. That mix had a lot of hard panning, mostly in the vocals. So what I heard throughout the store was verses with vocals that would abruptly cut out and then it was just instrumental until the chorus, and then voices were in and out, and it sounded quite strange!
I don't know if any of the other shoppers noticed but I was amused!

I have NPR on in the background as I drink my coffee, eat my breakfast, and post ... and suddenly I heard "Summer Means New Love" as their interstitial music between segments. I don't know if it was related to the story that came before, because frankly I hadn't been paying attention. But that song got my attention.
Every now and again they have some great choices for those musical interludes.

Today I heard this song at my local off-license, for the second time in two weeks. I used to perform "The Way It Is" with the receptions band I played keyboards with in the late 1980s to mid 1990s. Our aim was to nail the original recordings as closely as possible. So I used to write everything out -- including the two solos on this track, ghost notes and all! Ye gods. I think I got it 100% right on just one occasion! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Way_It_Is_(song)

I love that song. It's also the first time I'd ever heard of Bruce Hornsby.

I heard quite a run on our local public radio pop/rock music station (honestly, we are blessed to have that in addition to the typical news-related public radio station).
- "You and Your Sister," Chris Bell. This was on when I got into the car leaving the grocery store. I don't think I've ever heard this on any radio station! (I am pretty sure I've heard "I Am the Cosmos," though ... on this same station.) Very cool. Then...
- "Get a Grip (On Yourself)," by the Stranglers, which I'd not only never heard before but never heard of before Sheriff John Stone posted in the RIP thread this morning. I assume that's why they played it today. Pretty cool.
- "Can't Hardly Wait," by the Replacements. A little hometown love from the station, also a nice tie-in to what came two songs prior, considering Alex Chilton produced, played guitar, and arranged strings and horns on this one.
- "Rebel Yell," by Billy Idol. Unrelated to the previous, but just a cool and out-of-nowhere thing to hear.
Seriously, The Current (89.3) is a fabulous local resource.

I popped in to the nearby liquor store this afternoon--a rare occurrence these past 6-7 weeks, since I've been trying to drop a few more pounds, but it felt good!--and immediately I heard a voice I recognized. That's Joey Tempest. But it was a verse of a tune I couldn't quite place at first. Within 5 seconds it came to me, the first song I ever heard from the first album I ever bought:
Still kinda dumb, still kinda great.

I was driving home from work the other night and I heard not one but two New York Dolls' songs - "Personality Crisis" and "Babylon" - on 88.7 WXPN-FM in Philadelphia. I thought, oh no, David Johanson died, but it was his 73rd birthday. How did that escape me? Anyway, in 50 years, not once did I hear The New York Dolls on the radio, and it sounded so good!

One of my birthday gifts was the complete Lost in Space series on DVD. I vaguely remember watching that series in reruns in the early 1970s.
Resisting the temptation of marathoning the entire series from episode 1 on, I randomly selected a disc from season 3 because I wanted to see one in color (although the later episodes were inferior). One episode on the disc was one titled "Castles in Space", which I remember seeing parts of from when I was 4 or 5 years old! I mostly remembered the blue lady with the icicles for hair!
So how is this on topic? Well, at one point, because the Robinson family are camping out to watch over the ice lady, there's a campfire at night and spontaneously Will grabs an acoustic guitar and he and his sister Judy start belting out "Sloop John B". Of course, it's more like the original folk version, but the timeline of the airing of the episode is around the time of Pet Sounds (more or less). Just thought that was interesting.
I also noticed that while the scene was probably lip synched, Bill Mumy was pretty comfortable with that guitar. I know he's always been into music, but this shows he was quite influenced at an early age.

Of course John is the current drummer for The Beach Boys.
