Here is a new (positive) review of the new Dylan box set, Fragments: Time Out of Mind Sessions, which comes out Friday. And here is another one. I don't think I'm going to buy this one ... but I might buy certain tracks, and I'm definitely going to give it a listen. (For a while I bought all the Dylan Bootleg Series albums, but lately they've been passing me by.)

I love Time Out of Mind, but it's not one of those albums where I'm memorized every word, every note. What I am really hoping to get in the next couple years is some Planet Waves outtakes, and more live recordings from the 74 Dylan/Band tour.

Another very positive review of the new boot series release, Fragments. Pitchfork gives it an 8.6/10. Though there is almost as much about the sessions as about the music.

Here's a nice live version of "Make You Feel My Love". I would love to see a live album constructed/pieced together from this period in Dylan's touring career.

Wow, what an eclectic tracklist! A little heavy on the mid/late 1960s...which is good. I like the sound of that "Watching The River Flow".

I was actually looking up a Van Dyke Parks' song/video and came across this. Bob Dylan with Van Dyke Parks and Ry Cooder:

I watched Shadow Kingdom: The Early Songs Of Bob Dylan on PBS over the weekend. This was my takeaway:
- It is all in black & white, and the setting is a smokey bar. There are people smoking, listening, dancing, and making out. Dylan fronts the band. Interestingly, only the band members are wearing pandemic masks; Dylan and the bar patrons are not. Because of the way the thing was filmed, you can't make out Dylan's face, which is frustrating. I like to watch Dylan's facial expressions during his performances.
- The songs segue into each other, almost like they are cross-faded or mixed. It also shows the titles when the songs start.
- The band in the film "finger synch" all of their parts to prerecorded tracks, and they do a good job. They look like they are playing the actual music.
- The setlist is eclectic. The title says "Early Songs Of Bob Dylan", but the soundtrack does include "What Was It You Wanted" from 1989's Oh Mercy. The earliest song performed is "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" from 1965's Bringing It All Back Home.
- In typical Dylan fashion, the arrangements to all of the songs are new. Many have a haunting, eerie quality. The accordion is very prominent throughout. It's almost an unplugged sound; there are no drums. Dylan plays some good harmonica. I like the arrangements and the sound. It's very effective.
- I think Dylan's vocals are overall very good and excellent in places. It's hard to believe how his voice has...returned...or bounced back from the raspy, gravelly vocals of the 2000-2012 period. He performs these songs very well.
- The film/soundtrack is 54:00 but there are no long, drawn-out songs. "Tombstone Blues" clocks in at 5:00, but it's great. Dylan completely changed the arrangement. He slows it down drastically, but he pulls it off. It's one of my favorite tracks in the film.
- Overall, I think Shadow Kingdom is pretty good. Again, the highlights are Dylan's vocals and the arrangements. If you like the acoustic, subdued approach and dark, edgy feel, you'll like these songs. It's an "atmosphere" piece. Dylan is deadly serious. He sounds like he means it, and that's important to me.

I came across a fun little video that recaps the lead guitarists Bob Dylan has used from Mike Bloomfield right on through. Obviously it doesn't mention every single one... But you'll get a taste of most of the more prominent ones, including interview snippets and live performances.

I actually like some of the Bob Dylan At Budokan tracks - "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Love Minus Zero/No Limit", "All Along The Watchtower", "I Want You", and "Blowin' In The Wind" come to mind. Some of the other ones are...different. I bought it on vinyl many moons ago. I don't know if I'll splurge on this new collection. Probably not.

Yeah, let that sink in.
