This American Songwriter article says the three movies every Beach Boys fan should see are: the Endless Harmony doc; the Love & Mercy biopic; and the 1965 movie The Girls on the Beach. What do you think? Three movies, fiction or nonfiction, that are in some way essential to Beach Boys fans?

Yeah, those are three excellent picks. Girls on the Beach is fun, and bizarre - the whole thing has this plot about getting the Beatles to perform, and I'm like, "are you kids blind and deaf? You've got the Beach Boys RIGHT HERE!"

A nice little article on the Beach Boys' guitar parts. Guitar.com begins with a very complimentary introduction explaining that while the Beach Boys aren't considered a "guitar band," they had some great parts through the years. Then they list five songs with parts worth checking out (spanning 1963-1977). (The only real problem is the ads that make the browser window jump as they load, making it difficult to keep your place!) Try to guess the five songs they picked to showcase. I'll bet nobody gets even four of five without looking (or getting spoilers from someone). Heck, I doubt I'd have picked even two.

A recent Roy Wood interview. The first part is Beach Boys-related:

Thanks for posting that! It's cool that Wood is covering "Break Away." While I know it has probably gained popularity among Beach Boys fans since its initial release and, well, lack of success, it still feels to me like a song that deserves a much wider audience. Now, I don't think Roy Wood covering it is going to bring the kids a-runnin', but hey, every little bit helps.

Guitar World magazine posted a brief interview with Al Jardine focused on his instruments and gear, though with a few little anecdotes in there as well. I know he had recently been quoted about Manson taking one of his Martin guitars--I think maybe even also in Guitar World?--but this is a fuller interview. His first guitar, first song he learned, favorite amp, and so on.

Here is a new story from Fox based on an interview with Carnie Wilson and her daughter Lola. Apparently they were recently on a Fox TV singing show, "We Are Family." But they hit on a few things. Sadly, Carnie again references not seeing as much of Brian as she wants. "My dad's getting older now and we don't see him as much, and we miss him and love him." It has been odd seeing a couple of comments reminiscent of the Landy years out of her in these past few years. I'm not saying his life is at all like the Landy-era, just that it's sad if his daughters can't see him as much as they'd like for some reason (or vice versa).

I'm not saying his life is at all like the Landy-era, just that it's sad if his daughters can't see him as much as they'd like for some reason (or vice versa). I can't pull up the interview, but by Carnie's quote, I get the gist of it. I've seen these types of comments before. It raises two questions actually. First, why would Brian's daughters and grandchildren not be able to see their father whenever they want to. And second, if there's a problem here - and it wouldn't take much to get to the bottom of it - why isn't there more outrage? I'm talking directly about all of the fans who praise Melinda for just about everything regarding Brian's life. BTW, I haven't seen a photo of Melinda with or without Brian for a few years now.
Let's be honest. Brian probably isn't very active right now (and I don't mean that negatively; he can do whatever the hell he wants to), and I think it would be great for him to see his daughters and his grandchildren. I have this mental picture of Brian's mansion, with a large living room with TVs, a music room complete with piano and recording machines, and, of course, the pool. Not to mention the large spreads his cooks could prepare. Think of all the fun, fun, fun they could have!

I've never bought the "Melinda as Brian's savior" talk, I think she's pretty much guided Brian's career since around the time of Imagination, for better or worse. The first time I saw her, or was aware of her, was in the Don Was documentary. My impression was very positive; but later on, stories started leaking out about "Melinda didn't like the Paley sessions, wanted Brian to do something more A/C", and I figured the main motivation to get Brian touring was financial. I never dreamed that Brian would become a touring oldies act. But a lot of people LOVE Melinda, so what do I know?

But a lot of people LOVE Melinda, so what do I know? Do they really? I feel like I read more about these people who love Melinda than I do from people who love Melinda. The only people I recall talking that way regularly are those from one of the previous boards who freaked out at any criticism of Brian, his music, his career, etc. (Well, and the people who made Love & Mercy. They definitely deified her.) Otherwise I think it seems she's as much fair game as anyone else. I think she's probably been overall very good for Brian's personal happiness--at least as far as we know--and has been with him through a surprisingly productive and successful career. Is it quite the career I'd have wanted him to have? No, but I'm not his wife OR his manager, I'm just some schmuck.

I'm not trying to stir up sh--, really I'm not, but this is something that always bothered me, and I've never seen or heard it addressed - and I wondered why it wasn't (well, actually I kinda do know why it wasn't). Please watch the above video segment. Brian said that he asked Melinda for a separation. I think that's a pretty serious thing. Because this was around the recording of Imagination, it had to be shortly after they were married. Isn't anybody curious WHY Brian said that. I am.

Honestly? No, I don't wonder--at least not that much. Half of all marriages end in divorce, and from what I see online ( from a divorce law firm's website), that percentage goes up with subsequent marriages: 40% of first marriages, 60% of second marriages, and 73% of third marriages. So that just puts Brian and Melinda among the 6-in-10 majority for people in Brian's situation. (I don't believe Melinda had been married before.) And considering Brian's obvious problems, I'd actually guess the odds of separation or divorce would have been higher. He can't possibly be easy to deal with, genius and cash-cow or not.

Again, I don't want to appear...gossipy, I'm just a diehard fan. My curiosity isn't just limited to Brian asking for a separation - but also the reason why. If it was a personal thing, I don't need to know. And, forget about the recent Carnie thing for a second. Again, as a fan of Brian the artist/musician/Beach Boy, I can't help but wonder what was going on. As it pertained to the Beach Boys, we wanted to know the details of Brian's relationship with his father, with Mike Love, with his brothers, with Marilyn, with Van Dyke Parks, with his new "best friends", with Dr. Landy, and on and on. Is Melinda - as it pertains to Brian's career - off limits? Maybe Brian's reason for asking for a separation WAS career-based, maybe it did involve the Beach Boys, at least to some extent.
