Watching/listening to this now. Holland is always interesting to me because of the drastically different experiences people have with it. Some seem to love it immediately, others say it took them a long time to warm up to it. For me, it's been all over the map: I really liked it at first, then thought it was wildly overrated, then it rose in my estimation, and then fell again, and so on. It's been an almost 25-year roller coaster.
That's not only my experience with the album, but with a lot of the songs from it. And they don't all rise and fall at the same time, either. It's like whack-a-mole: this one up, that one down.
The Sail On Sailor box really started nudging it upward for me again. I listened en route to my early fall vacation this year and it just hit the spot.

I totally agree with you; for me personally the album took a while for me to warm up to and there were certain songs that did absolutely nothing for me, but over time it’s become one of my favorite of their post-Pet Sounds albums. As I mentioned on the podcast I don’t think that it quite reaches the highs of some of their other 70s albums like Sunflower and Surf’s Up but in terms of consistency from start to finish it definitely comes close.
