Many of us have mentioned through the years various Beach Boys songs--some released as singles, some just album tracks, and a few even unreleased during the band's active, creative lifetime--that sound to us like they could or should have been pretty big hits, but that weren't.
I thought I'd launch a thread about it, and (all) this is that.
Here's how I'm envisioning it:
1. DM (or is it PM? Direct, private, whatever) me with up to 10 songs you would like to see included. Please send me your candidates by the end of this weekend, so before Monday, Jan. 22.
2. If you can, please rank them in order.
3. I'll compile an aggregated list of up to 15 songs (but more likely 10, based ideally on some kind of consensus or popular choices) to post as a poll. (You ranking them will help in case we don't have a lot of overlap: it will allow me to know which you'd most like to see discussed.)
4. We'll then publish the poll and have public discussion, debate, and votes on the selections.
For purposes of what is a "bigger hit," I am using the admittedly subjective dividing line of a top 25 hit on the Hot 100. You can see where songs actually charted at the wiki page for the Beach Boys' discography.
Any Beach Boys or even individual Beach Boy's songs are eligible, whether actually released as a single (or even released at all).
If there's not sufficient interest, no problem, we'll reorganize or ditch the idea. But I thought it might be a fun discussion.
Edit: How the Thread Will Operate
I wanted to keep this thread discussion somewhat focused, and also to keep it active for a while (since there isn't a lot of news in Beach Boys world lately). So I decided to set up the discussion and voting in a tournament bracket style. As luck would have it, I am able to incorporate both people's favorite picks and also those songs that got interest from multiple people: I sorted the nominations first by number of people who named the song (19 songs had two or more nominations); and then by descending average rating (with people's first choices worth 10 points, second worth 9, and so forth). Because I also wanted to include everyone's top choice, everyone who provided rankings will see their #1 choice included. (There was only one top choice that wasn't among the 19 songs with multiple nominations.)
That leaves us at 20 songs, which is a workable number for a tournament as follows: the primary tournament will be between 16 songs, "seeded" by the above sorting (first # of nominations, then average rating, and lastly with the unrated top choice). Seeds 13-20 will first face off in a series of polls (13th song v 20th song; 14th v 19th; etc.), with the four winners advancing into the primary bracket. There we'll do the same thing, voting on the matchups.
I am not sure how long to give each poll, but am thinking a couple of days. I plan to hide results until each poll closes, though if you want to post your choices, you can. This ought to keep the thread alive for a couple of months.
And if all of that flew over your head, don't worry about it: you can just go with the flow and vote as each matchup pops up!
