Often I hear something on Dutch "classical" radio that catches my ear but I never get round to sharing it through lack of time, or just the bother of organizing a post. This thread seeks to redress the problem. It will name the piece, the composer and the performer(s) and little else. The rest is up to me. Today was the turn of "November 22nd", part two of Suite for Improvisor & Orchestra by Kinan Azmeh, who plays the solo clarinet, with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin conducted by Manuel Nawri: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinan_Azmeh

I heard this remarkable work yesterday and I can't get it out my head. It's the reimagining of a traditional sea shanty, Shallow Brown, by Percy Grainger, one of 20th-century "classical" music's true originals. According to a Hyperion recording of the work, it is scored for harmonium, four guitars, two mandolas, two mandolins, two ukuleles, piccolo, three clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, two alto saxophones, horn, strings, piano, baritone and choir. This may well approximate the forces employed for the rendition I heard yesterday evening, sung by the baritone Stephen Varcoe and the Joyful Company of Singers (chorus master Peter Broadbent) with the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hickox: gavinbryars.com/work_writing/percy-grainger-shallow-brown/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Grainger

Today I heard a work by the short-lived Swedish composer Joseph Martin Kraus (1756−1792), namely the "Overture" to his opera Soliman II (1788?) to a libretto by Charles Simon Favart, played by the Theresia Orchestra under Claudio Astronio: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Martin_Kraus

Ever heard of Gregor Joseph Werner? Nor had I until yesterday, when my favourite Dutch classical show played his "Pastorella III/301" performed by Lajos Rovatkay and la festa musicale: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Werner
