carllove , I am glad you didn't go! I've seen the news of the shooting that happened there. Awful. It was a great day. I was watching the parade and rally on my work computer and then three hood rats had to bring everything down to a crashing halt! A woman from the suburb next to me (Shawnee), was killed. I just hope our worthless Prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker, will actually prosecute for once. She and the equally worthless mayor, are part of the reason Kansas City had a record murder rate last year. Hopefully, for once, the perpetrators will receive the punishment they deserve. The city is angry. I am angry. Not a good look for Kansas City. Sounds like many of the issues that have been haunting Baltimore for the last decade or so.

On a lighter note, we've made our annual President's Day Weekend trip to Ocean City. There's a winter storm coming to Maryland late tonight, but it looks like we'll just get rain overnight here before it clears in the morning.

Yet more Minnesota strangeness this winter.
Our 4-6" of snow from just over a week ago all has melted, with yesterday a shockingly warm 62 or 63--a record high. And now ... we might be into single digits overnight, making for a roughly 50-degree swing within about 24 hours, with snow and heavy winds forecasted. Tomorrow's high is expected to be only about 20. And then right back into the 50s, 60s, and even a high temp of 71 forecasted for Sunday.
I know I've said it repeatedly, but it is such a bizarre winter!

This has to be one of the mildest winters in memory (not complaining mind you ). We only had one significant snowfall and that was only about 8 inches. We didn't have any of those days or string of days where the temperatures dipped to around zero degrees with strong winds and there were warnings and people hunkering inside. I just looked at the extended weather forecast and the temperatures are supposed to be in the high 50s for the next two weeks. Hey, it's March on Friday so...looks like we made it! Now, watch, we'll get a foot of snow this weekend.

Now, watch, we'll get a foot of snow this weekend. I feel the same way. There are a lot of people in Minnesota who are very unhappy with this winter, because of course we're known for outdoor winter sports like cross country (and a little downhill, but we don't have mountains, so...) skiing, ice fishing, and even dogsled racing. The northern third of the state depends largely on tourism including in winter. So I feel bad for them ... but personally, I've been loving it. I don't think we've even had a dozen inches of snow total in Minneapolis this winter, and we average over 50 inches. We've had subzero temps overnight on a few occasions, but I am not sure we've had any days with highs below zero; usually we have quite a few, including stretches where it never gets above zero for multiple days in a row. Regarding March--my thoughts exactly. Last year we got a massive blizzard in April, so we're not out of the woods yet. But it is definitely an odd one, in a good way.

3 degrees outside, a full 60 degrees colder than Monday afternoon/evening.
Minnesota.
I'm looking forward to 70 this weekend.

We seem to be done with significant winter weather (ie. Snow and ice).
But, we're still having some cold nights. And wind.
In fact, yesterday morning, the large oak tree by the house lost a large limb. It destroyed the gutter on the back of the house, shattered a kitchen window, and destroyed my grill canopy. There's minor damage to my roof. And, my deck, my fortress of solitude where I sit on weekends to shut out the stress of the world, suffered significant damage.
Things could have been far worse. There was no direct hit to the house. Most importantly, nobody got hurt or worse.
But, despite the logistical and financial burden, the tree is getting a death sentence today. And, now, we go through the insurance company.

And, now, we go through the insurance company. That's awful news. I live in perpetual fear of something similar happening to my house due to a neighbor's old, very large tree. (He is or was quite elderly, and I'm not even sure he's still alive: he hasn't lived in the house for several years, but neither has it gone up for sale or been inhabited since.) Glad to hear nobody got hurt, though. That's definitely most important. Dealing with repairs and the insurance company, though? Ugh.

I've always been anxious about this tree. Since Day 1 back in July 2017. I've had people out to look at it. Its been pruned. I've been assured that its healthy. But, no more chances.
I'll be happy that its gone. Plus, my yard won't be overwhelmed with acorns and leaves each fall anymore.

Its nice to turn the calendar to March. A month that brings the start of Daylight Saving Time, St. Patrick's Day, Spring, and regular season baseball.

It was 71 degrees yesterday afternoon and evening; snow flurries are supposed to begin falling any moment. Minnesota.
But it's meteorological spring. Better times ahead, even though we're looking at some in-between temps most of this week (40s, 50s). That's still above average for this time of year, which is hard to keep in mind considering we've had those temps much of winter...

Another sign that spring is right around the corner. This weekend, we go back to Daylight Saving Time.
Of course, this means that debate will come up again about whether DST or EST should be permanent. I feel like the Government's been talking about it for a few years now, but nothing's changed. I honestly don't find the biannual changing of the clocks to be the major inconvenience it's made out to be, but I do wish they'd decide one way or another.

This is the last official weekend of winter. We had some cold snaps, and even our first significant snow in a few years, but it was relatively mild, as far as winters go.
Its weird how, just recently, winter used to feel like forever. As recently as my early 30s, that time period between New year's and St. Paddy's Day used to feel like forever. Now, I honestly feel like we just had Christmas. And that was nearly three months ago.
Its supposed to be a fairly warm weekend for mid March. Its been in the 70s all week. With highs in the 60s tomorrow and Sunday.

After an absurdly warm winter, it looks like we're going to say hello to spring with some of our coldest weather in months. We've seen 70 a few times, 60 maybe half a dozen or 10 times, and high 50s regularly; yet in the coming week or so, we're going to have quite a few days with highs in the 30s or low 40s and even a few days of measurable snow.
It isn't unusual for Minnesota, but it is very unusual for this year, after we've regularly been 20 degrees above normal. And it's always a kick in the gut when it's later in the winter/early spring. Then again, it was last April Fool's day when a blizzard knocked down a neighbor's large tree branch, which in turn knocked out a section of my fence. Hopefully we won't get anything approaching that.
