So who else is done with Winter? Woke up to -12 degrees F this morning. They had to bring in heaters this weekend, to keep the building where my main office is warm. I’m taking a space heater with me this morning. Thankfully we also have blanket warmers, since it’s an hospital. Unfortunately, I have to go into the office today. I’ve never looked forward to 30 degree weather so much in my life! Come On Wednesday!

While I'm definitely not enjoying this sudden burst of winter, I'm trying to keep in mind that we have been well above average temperatures all season so far: these below-zero temps usually have hit us by December, and we're already halfway through January! We've yet to get a significant snowfall that stuck on the ground, so it's just barely covered now. This cold spell is supposed to last the week, but we get up into the 30s early next week. So it's not so bad. I have to say, the national news coverage of the cold in Iowa before the GOP caucus is cracking me up. I suppose it's freaking out the national media who parachute in just for the event, but I hate to tell them, it's not unusual for Iowa (or the rest of the Upper Midwest)! "Will people brave below-zero temperatures?" they ask. Uh, people in the Upper Midwest brave below-zero temperatures regularly from December through February! They brave those temps to go to work or school, to get groceries, to go shopping ... heck, their recreation is often outdoors in below-zero temps! That's one funny aspect of the national news...it's so limited in scope and perspective, as if we're all from New York, Washington, or Los Angeles.

For the first time in a week or so, we were above 0 when I woke up this morning! Granted, it was 1, but hey, that's above 0... (Wind chill was still -11, but one step at a time.) It is quite a heat wave, with the high today expected to be around 12.
I'm looking forward to next week, by which time this gradual warm-up will have us in the mid and high 30s. That'll feel great.
However, considering this has been the first really cold week this winter, and we still barely have a ground-cover of snow, I feel like I ought not complain much. It could be--and usually is by this time--much, much worse.

We've had our first real winter event in about two years.
This winter was actually pretty mild until this past weekend. Though, it wasn't super cold (for the Mid Atlantic) until Monday. It only got up to 25 or so, and we got about five inches of snow.
Sadly, my son is getting over an ear infection, or else I might have blown off work to have a snow fun day. He's really not experienced a whole lot of snow in his six years.

I keep hearing about cold spells and blizzards nationwide. So bizarre, in that we continue not to be a part of them. What little snow we have had--barely covering the ground--has started melting this week. I think by the weekend, it'll be entirely gone. (Maybe even by tomorrow, other than especially shady spots.)
The past two days, it was hovering right around freezing/melting when I woke up. I must be a pessimist, because I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, that inevitable foot of snow...

We received about three inches of snow over the weekend. It's all gone as it's been raining for a couple days now and in the low 50s. Aside from a couple days next week, highs will generally be in the upper 40s/ low 50s for the foreseeable future. For some reason, this year I'm very ready to get winter over with. I'm kind of getting my wish, although I'm sure February will bring at least one more cold snap.

Happy February, everyone: Minneapolis had an all-time high temperature for Jan. 31 yesterday. In fact, we blew out the previous daily high of 46 with the thermometers hitting 55! There is no snow to be found, people were out golfing ... it is unbelievable, more like October than February.
Outdoor sports enthusiasts--and Minnesota has plenty of those--are upset, because there are few or no opportunities for cross country or downhill skiing, ice fishing, outdoor hockey, and so on. I know there are many communities in the northern parts of the state that are suffering from a lack of winter tourism.
But I could not be happier. I read out on my patio for an hour or so after work yesterday, a joy that is typically off the table from November through April or May.

We actually got into the mid 70s last Friday. Right now, we seem to be pretty settled into the type of winter we've seen here the last four or five years with highs in the 40s and 50s, and it looks like its staying that way though mid month.
I'll admit, the Ravens deep playoff run has slowed down my weight loss plan for January, but there's still this month.
I've been doing longer workouts, and have opted to listen to full albums as opposed to my workout playlist. For some reason, that makes the workouts appear faster (even with the added time to decide on an album).

This morning we got 6-7 inches of snow and it's still falling. I'm debating shoveling the driveway and going out and making some work calls/visits - or not. My aching back is influencing my decision. It is supposed to get sunny and in the low 40's by the end of the day...

Our remarkable winter just keeps rollin', rolllin', rollin' on. It has cooled off a bit from our upper-40s highs of a week or two ago, but it's still well into the 30s every day and not much colder overnights. There has been no snow anywhere for weeks, and while there are rumors we might have a little bit later this week, it seems a) unlikely, and b) certain to melt immediately even if it happens.
We have still had only about 7" total this entire winter, which is about 25% of what we'd normally have had by now.
If we get into March without any significant snow, this winter is more or less over: we could (and often do) still get snow in March and April, but if it falls on warm, unfrozen ground, it won't last anyway.
A lot of people around here are complaining about this winter: I am not one of them!

Well, now even our wintry forecasts are losing their winterness: what was initially billed as about 1.5" of snow to fall this afternoon and evening is now being downgraded to 0.35". We'll see...

It was 64 yesterday and will be 62 for the Chiefs parade today. Folks were already lined up three deep on the parade route at 6:30 this morning. I must be old. I have no desire to go to the parade. Maybe once I’m retired, I might have the time, but it all looks like a huge hassle. I’m good watching it on TV. I went to the Royal’s parade in 1985. That was fun, but I was in my 20’s and had a lot more energy. Haven’t been to a celebration parade since.

Awful. It was a great day. I was watching the parade and rally on my work computer and then three hood rats had to bring everything down to a crashing halt! A woman from the suburb next to me (Shawnee), was killed. I just hope our worthless Prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker, will actually prosecute for once. She and the equally worthless mayor, are part of the reason Kansas City had a record murder rate last year. Hopefully, for once, the perpetrators will receive the punishment they deserve. The city is angry. I am angry. Not a good look for Kansas City.

I heard this morning on NPR that at least eight of the 21 people shot and injured were children, and that the woman killed was a popular radio DJ. I hope those who are guilty get the book thrown at them. I can relate to your anger at the local prosecutor: our newish county prosecutor, Mary Moriarty, is gaining quite a reputation for enraging victims and their families for her absurdly lenient plea deals and prosecutorial choices. (Some of them are being rejected by judges, thank goodness.) On a more weather-related note, sadly the regular season returned overnight: we got about 3-4" after all.
