“Maybe I’m Amazed” is a brilliant song that I never tire of. The lyrics remind me of the lyrics on Pet Sounds - Timeless and True. “Kleenex Akore” gets my vote for least favorite. Nothing to like there. Hahaha. I like that!

I'll also go with "Maybe I'm Amazed" as the BEST and "Kreen Akrore" as the WORST. And, I'm pretty sure Paul would've gone with "Maybe I'm Amazed", too. He continues to pull that one out every night he performs and really gets into it...despite struggling vocally with it. I think it's an important song to him. I have no doubt that it's a very important song to Paul considering what it represented. This was him stepping out on his own, really, for the first time. And consciously/deliberately doing so in response to John's "Instant Karma". The rest of the McCartney album was just him putzing around, biding his time, waiting for the Beatles to hopefully regroup. There's an alternate universe out there where that material was never even released (at least not in that form). "Maybe I'm Amazed" is Paul deciding to move on and really give his full effort as a solo artist.

I agree with you, B.E., but actually, I thought the main reason for "Maybe I'm Amazed" being important to Paul was because of its inspiration and relationship with Linda.

Could be both in equal parts. Many of his songs were inspired by her, and while that probably wasn't the first, it was certainly one of the main ones.

That was easy. Almost unanimous yes votes for Maybe I'm Amazed; ditto for worst votes for the kleenex drum solo.
Now things are going to get heated: Ram. Back in 1971, the critics hated this album. Now it always shows up on lists as Macca's best. My opinion on the album is somewhere between the two extremes. To refresh your memories, on vinyl, the track listing looks like this:
Too Many People 3 Legs Ram On Dear Boy Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey Smile Away
Heart of the Country Monkberry Moon Delight Eat at Home Long Haired Lady Ram On The Back Seat of My Car

Best song is a tough pick for me. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is a classic - a classic that Paul has never attempted to play live, but it can be done. I've seen a tribute band Wings 'N' Things do it several times and they do it perfectly. The Back Seat of My Car might be my personal favorite, though. It starts off all dreamy and Brian Wilsony until Paul decides to mix things up and change the tempo. I kind of wish he had just done 4 minutes of the dreamy, slow arrangement.
Worst is easy. Smile Away stinks like a pair of feet, but the all time worst is Monkberry Moon Delight. I know many Macca worshippers love this screaming POS. I hate it! Worst Paul vocal ever, terrible lyrics, if that's not enough, Linda's nasal voice mixed up high. What the hell is a monkberry anyway?

My Spotify has been cutting in and out today. I was planning on giving RAM a fresh listen after Nebraska, but alas, maybe tomorrow.

If no one wants to argue with me about Ram, we can move on to McCartney II. Not a big fan of this album, either.
Coming Up Temporary Secretary On the Way Waterfalls Nobody Knows
Front Parlour Summer's Day Song Frozen Jap Bogey Music Darkroom One of These Days
Paul's first album had a lot of charm. This doesn't. Summer's Day Song has a gorgeous melody, but feels like an unfinished song. One of These Days is the standout for me. Bogey Music would be the low point if not for Temporary Secretary.

McCartney II is one of my favorite McCartney albums, though I don't own all of them. I like almost every song on the album. Yes, I wish Paul would've expanded on the production a bit, but then it wouldn't possess the charm it has. I especially like Paul's melodies and lead vocals on the album. He was still singing very well.
BEST SONG: Temporary Secretary" - I need, I need a. Honorable mention to "Coming Up"; such a positive song, I loved it on the radio. And two great ballads - "Waterfalls" (a little too long; I prefer the single version) and "One Of These Days".
WORST SONG: "Bogie Music" or "Dark Room". Probably "Dark Room". Side 2 is a little weak.
Question: Is there any chance "Summer's Day Song" is about Brian Wilson?

I remember liking this album when I heard it but I don't know it well enough to vote.
I would say McCartney II is for Paul what Trans is for Neil.

Give them credit for trying new things, but the new things don't always work. and then there's Neil's rockabilly album, something Paul should have tried.

The next Macca album I bought after McCartney II was something called The McCartney Interview. I look at this as the template for all Macca interviews since. He goes into great depth on his version of the Beatles years - things like "we agreed we were not gonna go to America until we had a number one record there." If you have this album, you really don't need to read any interviews he's done since, as the stories never change. "I was singing 'it's getting better all the time' and John chimed in with 'it can't get no worse'". He briefly talks about a few Wings records, never names any of the Wings guys by name; and talks quite a bit about the making of McCartney II.

Playing catch up
Ram
Best - Too Many People - Almost went with Uncle Albert, another great one.
Worst - Smile Away
McCartney II
Best - Coming Up - Although I think the live versions are far superior.
Worst - Temporary Secretary.
