The Twins have remained atop the Central, but are finally inching toward a record to justify it. After going 8-2 in their last 10, they're 53-48.

Last night the Twins clinched their third AL Central title in the past five seasons ('19, '20, '23).
However, they have not won a postseason game since 2004. Hopefully that will change!

And after a 101 win season, the Orioles were swiftly disposed of by the Rangers, swept in the ALDS.

Former Twins star Joe Mauer was elected to the Hall of Fame yesterday. The award means a lot to locals, because Mauer is from St. Paul, Minnesota. Strangely, I never really followed his baseball career. I say strangely, because I watched him both as a standout HS quarterback in football and guard in basketball for his alma mater, Cretin-Derham Hall HS. He was the country's top-rated QB (and by some accounts, the #1 player overall) and baseball player as a HS senior, and he was good enough to play Division I basketball, too, though he didn't project as a star in that sport. He actually committed to play quarterback for Florida State before changing his mind and entering the MLB draft. The Twins made him the #1 pick, and the rest is history: he's in the Hall of Fame. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Mauer

I started following baseball in 2006 and Joe Mauer was one of the guys who made an early impression on me with the batting title he won that year. His 2009 season was even more impressive when he batted .365. No sure we'll see an average like that again with how specialized everything has become. I tend to lean towards him being a borderline hall of famer, but I'd rather guys be remembered than not.

Big week for the Orioles. Not only was a franchise sale announced to David Rubenstein. But, yesterday, we traded for ace pitcher Corbin Burnes from the Brewers.

I'm a little surprised it happened so quickly, but just over 24 hours prior to the scheduled Opening Day, Major League Baseball officially approved the sale of the Baltimore Orioles to David Rubenstein.

I know we have some baseball fans here in different locations.
I'm a Baltimore Orioles fan, and they're off to a pretty good start. 11-6 puts them at a 100+ win pace. Yet, if you read the chatter online or listen to the call in shows, you would seriously think we were still in rebuild mode.
I'm not sure if this is the case in Philly, Minnesota, KC, or Cincinnati, but I feel like, for some reason, baseball fans tend to view baseball through football eyes, thinking every at bat, every pitch is like Game 7 of the World Series. But, it's the ultimate game of failure. It features a 162 game grind. The best hitters make outs 70% of the time. The best teams will lose 60 or so games. The game requires fans to put up with adversity. But, fans seem to struggle with that. It's odd.
Here's an example. The Orioles just called up baseball's top prospect - Jackson Holliday. He's played six games. So far, he's only managed a single and a walk. So, after six games, fans are saying "he's overmatched." Rookies are going to struggle, and the funny thing is, the Orioles are 4-2 in these games and putting up runs, so it's not like his taking his lumps is really costing us anything now.
Also....apologies for the rant. I know I've started threads called "Get off my lawn," but I think baseball fans are the ultimate "Get off my lawn" fans. I've read and heard fans get bothered by the smallest things. A cap worn askew, a tattoo, a beard, an unbuttoned jersey button, a player wearing jewelry. All these things have something in common. They have nothing to do with the game itself.
During the offseason, the Orioles signed future HOF closer Craig Kimbrel. And people were pissed. Why? Because of his unorthodox "vulture stance." The guy put up All Stars last year, and our fans were angry that he's an Orioles because of his stance on the mound. What the hell are we doing here. Even worse, there were some fans who complained "I don't know if I can root for a guy who used to be with the Red Sox." So, we just shouldn't acquire players who played for rivals? What the what? When I was a kid in the early 1990s, I hated the Toronto Blue Jays with every fiber of my being. But, when the Orioles signed Roberto Alomar, I was beyond thrilled. To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, at the end of the day, we're basically rooting for laundry. So, who cares who they played for? Yankees fans never seemed to have any issue embracing former Red Sox (Babe Ruth, Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, Johnny Damon). And that's a real rivalry. Not the one sided ones like the Orioles have with the Red Sox.
So, yeah, I'm hoping much like the Ravens, it's just a very loud, vocal portion of Orioles fans who seem to be completely and utterly insane. Anyone else notice this with their teams?

As you know, the Twins and Orioles are in the midst of the third game of a 3-game series right now. The Twins lost both of the first two and are 6-10 right now.
THE SKY IS FALLING among Twins fans. After yesterday's 11-3 drubbing, manager Rocco Baldelli said the team has to be better prepared. You'd think he said he wishes his daughter could marry Vladimir Putin or something: everybody has something to say. "Isn't that his job?" "What is spring training for?" Complaints about the pitching. Tons and tons of complaints about the GM, Falvey. And the inevitable: "the Twins are just not good and they never will be."
So, yeah, totally reasonable stuff...
As for fans refusing to cheer for former opponents, my first thought is on the NFL side, when we signed Brett Favre. Vikings fans had always hated Favre, as the Packers have been our main rival forever. Most people changed their tune quickly, but there were a few who never did accept him. I mean, he led us to the NFC Championship Game, but hey, if it's more fun to hate him and not cheer for the team...

I know the Twins are missing some key players. But, you guys are in the AL Central, so you never know. Get some of those players back, and anything can happen in that division. Speaking of the Orioles / Twins series, I just saw this story, and it made me sick. www.wmar2news.com/local/we-will-make-it-right-byron-buxton-to-meet-8-year-old-twins-fan-who-had-signed-ball-stolen-at-oriole-parkA father / son tandem of Twins fans who live in Annapolis, MD attended one of the games this week, and passed a baseball down to Byron Buxton to sign. And, while the ball was being passed back to the kid, an 8 year old kid mind you, the ball was swiped by a fan who took off with the ball. The eight year old kid was understandably reduced to tears. It was probably stolen by some dirtbag autograph chaser who put the ball on eBay. I'm disappointed that no Orioles fans ran the guy down and beat the ever loving shit out of him for making an eight year old boy cry as a baseball game. Not a great look for Orioles fans with this incident, and truly shameful. But, luckily, it seems Buxton caught wind of the story, so it will have a happy ending, but even with that an eight year old boy's trust in the world is probably shattered.

The Reds swept the White Sox last weekend, then proceeded to get swept by the Mariners. Looking like it's going to be another up and down season, but I still feel good about our playoff hopes. We are better than last year, and we'll be getting two key players back in the second half of the year.
