I think every good thread wanders a little, so indulge me for a bit more down this path.
"Good Vibrations" definitely doesn't seem like a natural fit with the other Smile material. For me, musically it feels midway between Pet Sound and Smile, some sort of link. Its edited, modular format is like the latter, but some of the segments themselves feel to me more like the former, especially the verses. And as sockit says, lyrically it's definitely an odd fit. (What other Smile material is about romantic love? "Wonderful." Anything else?)
I know there were bigger issues about finishing and assembling material, but I wonder whether how and where "Good Vibrations" was ever a serious issue back in 1966-67. I wonder if Brian in particular really thought of it as being of a piece with the rest of the material, or if it was more just that of course they'd include a massive hit on the album.
The whole concept album thing always rubs me the wrong way when it's not a clear storyline, because I think people take a loose concept too seriously and try to make a tight one. "Good Vibrations" doesn't fit into a tight concept ... but I don't really think there was one to begin with.
Anyway, there's my additional meandering off the main path of the thread.
And therein lies one of many of the endlessly debatable subjects in the BBs fan world! Personally, I'm a problem-solver and a huge fan of puzzles (of all types). At work I allocate places and means of transfer for product that my company manufactures (yes, I'm in shipping). On my breaks and in my spare time I open up my pencil puzzle magazines and lose myself in brain games. I seem to have this thing about applying this to music too. I have pondered about where GV would be most at home, other than on side A of a 45 rpm single...and countless comps. It's not an easy answer.

Just bumping the thread because I think it's a fun one and would love to hear from those who haven't given answers. I'd hate for the thread to sink too far below the fold.

The new question is somewhat clumsily worded but you get the picture: If there was one occasion involving one or more of the Boys that you could go back in time and attend, what would it be?I'm going to have to give this some thought myself.

If there was one occasion involving one or more of the Boys that you could go back in time and attend, what would it be? I am not one to jump for opportunities. There is a line from a Herman Dune song that I love, "I give myself a season before I make a decision," to which I relate strongly. I'll wait, ponder, think it over, wait a little longer ... then do something suddenly.
Well, in 2012, the Beach Boys did not come to Minneapolis on their C50 tour. The closest they came was Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which probably seems right next door to those of you for whom the Midwest is all the same, but it's about a 6-7 hour drive. And, well, I did not go. Both Brian Wilson and the touring band come here often enough, I just assumed they MUST have a Minneapolis date in mind to plug in ... right? Right?
Wrong.
As I recall it, they came as close as Chicago among some early dates, then maybe added Milwaukee later? Anyway, then they went off to Europe, Asia, Australia, and finished off in the UK. And that was that. The Beach Boys reunited for the first and only time (to date) in my fandom, and I didn't go. I wish I had.

Not quite the same as Kapitan, but the night after the C50 show in Cincinnati, they were playing in Cleveland, which is four hours away. I seriously considered it, but ultimately passed as a 16 year old without a ton of money. I think I was also slightly assuming they would stay together with how well everything was going.

One of the original Beachago shows in the '70s -- the tour didn't come anywhere near to where I lived then.

I would've loved to attend one of their In Concert era shows circa 1973 when they were touring for Holland. Granted, I have nothing to go on besides live albums and video clips, but in the best opinion I can muster from that data, that's the peak for The Beach Boys as a live act.
To piggyback on Kap and TCK, I'd also love to relive the 2012 show I attended with the Beach Boys knowledge I've attained since.

It's interesting that so far everyone has chosen a show they missed for one reason or another... After a great deal of thought, and being utterly unable to choose one studio date out of so many, I've decided to opt for one day (or one evening, or one hour, come to that) during the UK Pet Sounds promotion campaign at the Waldorf Hotel when Bruce (and Kim Fowley) played host to people from the press and the music world -- but not (and folks I can't stress this enough) the evening Paul and John were there! To attend one of the earlier sessions would be utterly magical.

Oh, sorry, I understood the question to mean something that would have been possible to attend, like a missed opportunity.
You clearly meant it to be that this trip back in time could be to any time, even before our births. My answer would certainly change. No question. Before it was pretty easy; now it's a difficult question I'll have to think about.

It's my fault, Cap'n -- the question was poorly worded. Please take all the time you need!

This is really a difficult question, now that I understand it to be opened up to all time. There are so many moments I'd have loved to see, either for their greatness or just because they seem so interesting (even if tragic).
I think my choice is something I don't even know to have happened, or at least I don't know quite how or when it happened. But at some point, Brian Wilson introduced the group to his and Van Dyke's song "Surf's Up." Did he already have some of the track recorded before he shared it with them? Or did he sing it, accompanying himself on piano? Was it to someone first--maybe Carl or Dennis--or more of them all at once? I have no idea.
But I think that's my choice. I like to imagine he played and sang it straight through for at least several of them. I can hardly imagine their reactions. As amazing as Pet Sounds was, this song was a different kind of thing altogether.

If we not talking about typical moments fans got to experience, I'd have loved to have been there when Bruce Johnston played Pet Sounds for John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

If a time machine existed and I was allowed to attend one Beach Boys concert in the past, I would go to the 1969 European Tour performance in Helsinki, Finland.
I adore the beardless, chubby cheeked 1969 Carl. His voice was at it's finest and that concert included Breakaway and I Can Hear Music, two songs I can watch on video over and over. The set looks pretty short, and it predates Sunflower, but to see and hear Carl Wilson in person in 1969, would be the fulfillment of my dreams.
