A glowing remembrance of Kenny Rogers from a local music critic.
i looked up some of the First Edition stuff this past weekend; they really were a good band. i had forgotten just how popular they were; Rogers later superstardom in country music kind of overshadowed the success he'd had with the group.

My first exposure to Bill Withers was when he would provide the singing voice to Garfield on his 1980s animated specials.

Those last two were in my old band's repertoire for years. My favourite of his is "Use Me", an excellent track you don't hear nearly as often as the Famous Four. Rest in peace, sir.

Every obit is mentioning "Lovely Day", like I should know it. Never heard it. I still hear "Use Me" a lot on the oldies stations. Aside from "Ain't No Sunshine", "Lean on Me", and the Grover Washington tune, the only one I remember is "Grandma's Hands".

I was just thinking the other day I hadn't heard anything about his condition recently, and assumed he was getting better. Turns out it was the opposite, unfortunately.

The great alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, who was notably a key part of Miles Davis's band in Birth of the Cool as well as a member of Claude Thornhill's and Stan Kenton's groups and a solo artist, died of pneumonia brought on by COVID-19.

Birth of the Cool is one of the few jazz albums I own (and enjoy). I see Mr Konitz also played on Miles Ahead--I must give that a listen soon. Looking at his discography, LK was mind-bogglingly prolific! If a jazzoramus like me is familiar with his name, it must mean it's widely known outside of the jazz world as well. Rest in peace, sir. Afterthought: I see Lee's sole connection with the BB is (to my knowledge) "Blueberry Hill" on the Ethan Iverson album Costumes are Mandatory. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costumes_Are_Mandatory

Looking at his discography, LK was mind-bogglingly prolific! I think historically you'll see that from a lot of jazz musicians. It makes sense, in that their sessions have tended to include more cover or traditional songs as well as originals, and that their sessions could happen much easier than rock or pop musicians'. For example, the first great Miles Davis quintet held three recording sessions (Nov. 16, 1955; May 11 and Oct. 26, 1956) that resulted in five full albums and one track on a sixth album.
