Happy Birthday to the late, great Ronnie James Dio, one of rock's all time great voices, who would've been 77 today.

Happy 72nd Birthday to Queen's Brian May Maybe the smartest man in rock! (Or at least the most academically accomplished.)
He was a recent guest on the physicist Lawrence Krauss's podcast "Origins" to talk a bit about his science background, by the way, if anyone is interested to check that kind of of thing out.

He probably is.
Its too bad his post Queen output is so disappointing. I'd always thought he could find a good singer and put out a kick ass hard rock album.

It's true. He's got a nice voice, but it is so soft and mellow, it doesn't really work for the rocking numbers. That's something that both Freddie and Roger could do to complement him.

Along those lines (but a bit off topic), Queen might have my favorite range of voices across a band. All three primary singers brought something different, yet they all had good range and blended beautifully.

One of the things I disliked about the 2nd half of their career is the lack of Roger and Brian vocals. I'd agree with that. Personally I love when bands with multiple good singers use those singers. Even if one is obviously the best singer, i.e., Freddie, I don't see any reason not to spread things around to some extent. Doesn't even have to be full songs, necessarily: it can be the verses, a bridge, or whatever. It's a part of arranging, adding different textures. I think most bands come up short in that respect.

I dont think I've ever read an explanation for the lack of Brian and Roger vocals after The Game. Perhaps it was an ego thing with Freddie, who often in concert would sing leads that Brian or Roger did in studio. That's a reason I love The Who so much too, I love the addition of Pete and John leads, even the occasional one from Keith. Its also a reason I don't often listen to Brian Wilson's solo albums in full. His later voice can't carry a full album.

I wonder if it was to keep Freddie interested in the band. Obviously he flirted with a solo career on the side and at the time there were always rumors he was quitting to do his own thing. Interviews I've heard don't exactly reject that, but rather put it in the context of "well, we've been together a long time, we can do both solo and group work, of course our tastes are different," etc. Maybe keeping him happy enough to stick around meant giving him more leads. But that's pure speculation on my part.

I was actually hoping for some good Brian and Roger leads on the utterly mediocre lone Queen + Paul Rodgers album, but nothing doing there either.
