I've thought about that with some other products that people bought only to publicly destroy. If I were Budweiser, I'd be like "hey, that wasn't a very good take. You might want to do a few more...get a better angle." When irate fans were burning Beatles albums and merch after John's "bigger than Jesus" comment, Ringo famously quipped "they had to buy the albums first." Imagine if social media existed back then.

Well here's a surprise: while the Frank Zappa estate has been releasing a lot of live material and various deluxe reissues in recent years, they have unearthed and are releasing an entirely new studio album of mostly "new" (meaning not used elsewhere) songs, Funky Nothingness, due for June 30 release. The album was apparently originally conceived as the solo follow-up to 1969's Hot Rats, but was shelved as FZ worked on 200 Motels and Chunga's Revenge. It's a crack band comprising FZ, multi-instrumentalist Ian Underwood, Wrecking Crew bassist Max Bennett, violinist/singer Sugarcane Harris, and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. The release is a multidisc set, but disc 1 is music as recorded and mixed by FZ at the time. (The others are various sessions, outtakes, and assorted other material from the time.) 1. "Funky Nothingness" 2. "Tommy/Vincent Duo I" 3. "Love Will Make Your Mind Go Wild" 4. "I'm a Rollin' Stone" 5. "Chunga's Revenge" (Basement Version) 6. "Basement Jam" 7. "Work With Me Annie / Annie Had A Baby" 8. "Tommy/Vincent Duo II" 9. "Sharleena" (1970 Record Plant Mix) 10. "Khaki Sack" 11. "Twinkle Tits" Here is "Work With Me Annie / Annie Had a Baby," a dopey kind of blues credited as written by Hank Ballard, Henry Glover, and Sydney Nathan and featuring Harris and FZ soloing. (Cool job of Harris comping on his violin--strumming it--behind Zappa's solo.)

Another in what seems like an endless string of legacy bands doing a farewell tour amidst a certain amount of acrimony as surviving original members are on the sidelines: Aerosmith, 50 years after their debut album, will do its (allegedly) final tour this fall and winter without founding drummer Joey Kramer. Their press release says Kramer "regrettably made the decision" to sit out the tour, but it's worth noting that in recent years he was pushed out of the live group and even sued to try to regain his place. (He was unsuccessful.) It's easy to imagine "his" decision being made for him by his bandmates or or some collection of lawyers.

Chart rules related to bundling albums with merch have changed again: albums bundled with merch are again allowed to count toward sales for chart purposes, but only with physical albums included, up to two packages per album, and with preapproval. www.billboard.com/pro/billboard-fan-packs-album-charts/

Paul Simon, 81, told The Times (UK) that he has lost almost all of the hearing in one ear. "[T]he ailment came on “quite suddenly.” “Nobody has an explanation for it,” Simon explained. “So everything became more difficult. My reaction to that was frustration and annoyance; not quite anger yet, because I thought it would pass, it would repair itself.” Because of the partial deafness, he says even the occasional performances he's made since more-or-less retiring from touring in 2018 are now probably a thing of the past. But he also says he was tired of touring anyway. “Sometimes there are songs that I like and then at a certain point in a tour, I’ll say, ‘What the fuck are you doing, Paul?’ Quite often that would come during 'You Can Call Me Al.' I’d think, ‘What are you doing? You’re like a Paul Simon cover band. You should get off the road, go home.’” The original interview is behind a paywall, but excerpts of it are here.

Music Business Worldwide is reporting that Queen are in discussions to sell their publishing and recorded music rights--as has been happening with many major legacy artists the past few years--for a projected, unreal $1.1 billion. Because they are in early stages and negotiations have to progress, obviously that number is just an industry-expert estimate, but even so, it is more than double the previous record, Bruce Springsteen's $500 million. Queen's rights (both publishing and recorded music) are currently owned by the three surviving members of Queen and the estate of Freddie Mercury.

Jewel is getting some criticism for her rendition of The National Anthem at yesterday's Indianapolis 500. I didn't think it was that bad. I've heard worse versions.

I stumbled upon this the other day. And, I never in a million years thought I'd say this.....but good for Billie Eilish www.cnn.com/2023/05/29/entertainment/billie-eilish-feminine/index.htmlLong story short, when Eilish first came upon the scene a few years ago, she dressed like a "tom boy," and fans gave her guff for it. Now, she's recently posted some pictures in more "feminine" clothing and fans....gave her guff for it. So, she went off on them. Good for her, I say. Good for her. It's no secret that the rise of social media has lead to a rise in fan entitlement. It's really obnoxious, and one of the reasons I don't take fan comments on Facebook pages seriously.

The teaser for a new documentary on Wham (to be released July 5 on Netflix) has been released.
I'm interested in this even though I'm not a HUGE fan of Wham or George Michael, but I've always thought Michael was really talented. I'm curious to learn more, especially since I think he was quite a good musician and so learning about him in that bubblegum context (not to mention, I believe, him being closeted at the time) just seems like an interesting thing.
Personally I think this one is an absolute pop masterpiece (with its roots in Motown and soul music).

The Springsteen thread is nearly over, with just three weeks' worth of albums left to discuss. But maybe it'll just be a hiatus for a few months: according to former E Street Band keyboardist David Sancious, they recently worked on the "sequel" to Springsteen's most recent album, the soul and R&B covers album Only the Strong Survive. It contains another 18 covers in those same styles. This per Mojo.
