Maybe the most practical idea of all, considering the environment we're likely to be in for the next 9-12 months, is a one-off reunion that is prerecorded and broadcast on some popular outlet, a la Brian's Vegas show before NPP. Except presumably with no, or few, fans.
Not only can this accommodate numerous lineup variations, but means they can stop and start as necessary to get good takes without resorting to studio post-production. That would make many people happy, avoiding both bum notes and the dreaded A-word.
Honestly a 60th Anniversary Spectacular could be really cool, and wouldn't require a big (or even medium or small) tour to be arranged. Which, if they were doing it, would have to be in the works already, you'd think. And considering nobody knows what the world will look like in 9 months, that would be hard to do.
See, that's the thing. Going back to the Al interview for a second. Al just throws it out there that the group will be doing 20 or 30 shows next year, and he leaves it at that. But, let's be realistic here and use some common sense. If they are scheduling 60th Anniversary Reunion dates for next year, then, first, Mike & Bruce HAVE TO KNOW which dates are which, so they can schedule their ongoing Beach Boys' tour dates AROUND them (which would surely piss off several Beach Boys' fans). And second, if dates are being scheduled as legitimate 60th Anniversary Reunion dates, then why would you want to keep them quiet? If not the Beach Boys (who are proven to be stupid), at least the promoters would want the word to get out so they can start promoting the gigs and start selling tickets. However, so far, other than Al's...pronouncement...there hasn't been a single word about any reunion shows.
To your point, kds, yes, they could push 60th Anniversary plans to 2022, which would make it a full ten years since the 50th Anniversary. But that would make too much sense. Then they could actually take their time and do it right instead of rushing into it (both with a possible album and short tour?) which they did in 2012. Hey, we're already into May of this year!
And to The Kapitan's point, true, time ain't on their side.
