If Brian hasn't written/recorded anything during all this time off, I think it's safe to say the library is closed to any kind of new album. I still think a song here and there could be a possibility (as I mentioned above with the documentary).

I did see over there that he apparently has a new song done with Jim James of My Morning Jacket. I'm curious about that. He isn't the most obvious choice, but he's a good singer with a broad range of influences. (He was among the musicians--along with Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, a guy from Dawes--who did the "Lost Basement Tapes" project of Dylan songs a few years back.)

Good call, Kapitan. I can definitely hear that. Almost sounds like a mashup of 3-5 songs from that era. Not bad!

Its really not surprising when you consider that the material from that Brian / Joe sessions in 1998 has been mined. And, unfortunately, we won't get any further collaborations with Bennett. Unless Brian and his band get on that rock and roll covers album (yawn), I wouldn't expect much from Brian. (Quoted from another thread but pulled over to this one since it's relevant.)
I think this is right. My suspicion was already that Brian was more or less done making new music, with precious little word of anything new since just before NPP. Since then, it's been a lot of Pet Sounds, a little Christmas, more Pet Sounds, and that Friends/Surf's Up themed tour. And now almost a whole year off with no mention of anything new even as he approaches 80 and looks ever-frailer.
Not expecting anything else.

Throughout the pandemic...I thought a lot about Brian. There was probably a time in his past when he would've welcomed so much time to himself (other than his family) to write, record...and just do whatever came to his mind musically with no deadlines to meet. In the last year he's had no concerts, no album projects, no interviews, no TV appearances, and I'm guessing no BRI meetings (unless by Zoom). It could've been worked out (through COVID testing) to have musician friends either join Brian at his home, or find a home studio at somebody else's house, again assuming everything could be cleared health-wise. If Brian didn't come up with some (several, no matter what the quality?) new songs during the last year, I would assume his songwriting career to be pretty much a wrap, at least as a sitting down and devoting specific time to a specific project kind of thing.

Remember this thread? With Al's latest from ESQ, it seems we may need to reconsider...

I switched my vote, by the way, from "nothing" to "occasional new / digital single" based on the 60th being more or less a sure thing. I'm still not convinced there will be a wholly new album, but I'm pretty sure there will be some new material, even if it's just the highlight of another comp or live album.

My heart tells me there's another album to come. My head says it is over.

My heart tells me there's another album to come. My head says it is over. Does your head really think OVER-over? Not even a new song or two in conjunction with the 60th? Because that's where I am now. Al says maybe an album, and that might be optimistic ... but a song or two? I could see that for sure, and even think it's likely. Though hopefully not just another remake like the C50 "Do It Again."

So with there being a few songs we know have been recorded in conjunction with the Long Promised Road doc (the new one and a few remakes and oldies) and AGD having said (apparently going off some BW band member's social media) that his band has been in the studio this past week, I guess it's time to revisit this again.
The new wrinkle might be, are these recordings destined for a Brian Wilson album, a Beach Boys album, some of each, none of the above...?

If I'm being totally honest - and this is no surprise - come on, call Joe Thomas and Brian's band (and any selected Mike's band members) and flesh out a new Beach Boys' album. We know Al has a song. Bruce? David? Just limit the oldies/covers to two. While Brian's vocals have been very good on his last couple of solo albums, I don't know if I want to hear him carry a new album all by himself (though I'm sure Al will be present), especially on rock and roll oldies.
Hey, I know an old singer who might want to tackle those!

Well, I might have to revise my vote, because otherwise I'm admitting defeat: as sneakily announced in the Long Promised Road thread, there will indeed be another Brian Wilson studio album released--apparently next week!--as a soundtrack.

But how many of those tracks are new recordings?

So glad to be wrong! (As I dust off my keyboard for the first time in ages. Thanks - At My Piano!)

The new song, "Right Where I Belong," by Brian Wilson and Jim James.
