That's life in 2020. And it's why I keep saying that people will be a lot happier if they could separate art and artist. It's really not that hard.

The last couple of days I've been reading various comments from The Haters and they're saying things like, "I'll never listen to a Mike Love-sung Beach Boys' song again" or "Brian should take the license away from Mike". As The Haters are typing those comments, they're listening to The Ronettes on their computer, buying tickets to a Brian Wilson concert (you know, the guy who is sitting back and collecting $$$$$$$ from every show Mike plays), and posting about what a great guy Dennis Wilson was. Hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy. Right, what a joke. They'll probably also not hesitate to spin their copies of That Lucky Old Sun, despite the involvement on a certain member BW bandmember whose actions caused less anger than gigs Mike has played. But, if people are really going to not listen to Little Deuce Coupe or Here Today or Kiss Me Baby over this, then they're beyond help.

It's like the annoying person at work who complains constantly about how things are so awful, he's gonna quit. Day after day, week after week, year after year. "That's it, I'm outta here," he says to anyone who will listen.
And as with that archetypal work-whiner, the solution is just don't engage. You're giving up on the Beach Boys? OK. Bye.

I seem to remember posters claiming they were "done with the Beach Boys" just because there was a rumor Mike and Bruce were to play at the Inauguration three years ago.

I've said this before, but if I stopped listening to an artist because they did something horrible, supported a cause / politician I didn't like, or slammed a cause / politician I supported, then I'd have to send at least half of my CD collection to Goodwill.

Mike haters account for a small portion of the petition signatures, that's about it. If their comments continue to bother any of you, may I suggest ignoring them or confronting them directly. I think we're all here, in part, to get away from the ugliness of fan politics.

I think we're all here, in part, to get away from the ugliness of fan politics. Yes, B.E., like Kapitan said, point taken. However, for me personally, that's easier said than done. I guess it's no secret that I can still get passionate about certain BB-related issues, and so-called fans (or non-fans) "hating" Beach Boys is one of them. I can think of no better place to vent, if you will, than on a Beach Boys' message board. That's one of the purposes it serves. Now, can my/one's venting get to be extreme, over-the-top, and yes, bothersome to some? Of course, though I'm surprised if I reached that level with my posts, but that's up to others to decide, I guess.
I suppose I can ignore the hating by choosing to just not go where those comments are found, but I'm not sure I want to deprive myself of information that feeds into my fandom. I want to read as much as I can about my favorite artists. And, confronting them? I have no desire to do that which is one of the reasons I choose to post here. They ain't around. But if they were, I like a good debate occasionally, and while I'm probably rusty, I'm not 100% opposed to confronting them. What WOULD probably keep me from confronting 99.9% of them is that I refuse to lower myself to their level. I don't want any part of it or them. Frankly, I have little respect for The Haters, and don't even want to dignify them directly with my thoughts or opinions.
All of that said, again, I "get it", and I take your suggestions seriously as I do respect your opinions. I can't promise you or anyone that I will totally refrain from coming on The Beach Boys Today! Forum and venting, and if that includes taking shots at The Haters, so be it. Hey, I take shots at all of The Beach Boys, too, but I think I know where and when to stop without crossing the line. I don't engage in personal insults, name-calling, taking things totally out of context, or going on and on with pages of unwarranted derision. I also don't think my venting or responding is bringing the ugliness of fans' politics to this board. I view it as discussing a relevant topic. Yeah, it ain't the most popular subject, I'll grant you that. But it is topical, it is relevant, and it is worth mentioning in that crazy Beach Boys' world.
Finally, and I say this with all due respect, and I mean that, and in keeping the peace on THIS board which is very, very important, the ignoring part could also apply to you viewing my posts about The Haters. Hey, how about that Sixers' trade?

Outside of Beach Boys World, very few care about this. (I'm anti-trophy hunting just for the record). On the other hand, for some (many?) outside of this world, the reaction is likely, Beach Boys, they still exist?

I noticed a lot of the music pages I follow are sharing very click baity articles on this with headlines like "Brian Wilson urges fans to boycott Beach Boys."

It would be interesting to know if, post-Safari Club Convention show, there were ANY dips in record sales or concert ticket sales. I'm fairly sure that several of the fans (Haters?) who were so anti-Mike Love and anti-trophy hunting, a few weeks removed, are now of the mind set - Trophy hunting? What trophy hunting? Oh yeah, I'm so against trophy hunting...

Thanks. That sums it up in a reasonable way. Though I could do without the dig at Minneapolis! (Raccoon Convention, lol!)
