I can't agree with you on that. I don't like any of the talk tracks (including or even especially the poetry on Beaks of Eagles, actually). There are two people in the history of rock and roll whose equivalent songs I enjoy: Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits. I could listen to them talk all day. Anyone else--especially great harmony singers!--no thanks.

(The Boys'] [most controversial] [genre] The genre in question being the "talk track" (and I don't mean "The Beaks Of Eagles"). This trio is much maligned in BB Land. To my mind, all three serve some purpose: - On "'Cassius' Love vs. 'Sonny' Wilson", fans could hear their idols horsing around (and Al speaking) at a time when there was only the occasional interview with Mike and/or Brian. - The note that Brian forgets on "Our Favourite Recording Sessions" is the first pitched note of the following track, "Don't Back Down". - As for "Bull Session With The 'Big Daddy'" (and this is where the ripe fruit generally starts to fly), how else do you follow "In The Back Of My Mind"? It is quite simply unfollowable. On the other hand, you can't end the album with it--that wouldn't feel right, at least to me. Hence the escape clause of a talk track, which in itself is a great time capsule (the Paris show, "that big old thing"). Just my two eurocents... I'll have to respectfully disagree. Maybe one talk track on the back end of an album would be forgivable, but to do it three times? Especially on Today, which was to be The Beach Boys' first "mature" album. For me, the worst is Cassius v Sonny because it's stuck in the middle of Side 1, between In the Parkin' Lot and The Warmth of the Sun. At least they had enough good sense to leave Bull Session at the tail end of Today. I'll add that these tracks must've been especially frustrating for anyone listening to SDV2 or All Summer Long on an 8 track or cassette.

I don't dislike the talk tracks in isolation, they're kind of fun as just a random Beach Boys thing to listen to, but I don't think they belong on their albums. They definitely interrupt the flow of great music. It would have been better if they had put together little "extras" discs like the Beatles did with their Christmas messages. Those would be fun to collect and listen to as fan club items, or even as bonuses sold with the albums.
