I also became a fan in 2007, and was around to witness the Lucky Old Sun album, which was great. I never witnessed a comeback, only what seems to have been a sharp decline since 2014. From 2004 to 2014 it was good to be a fan, Brian was quite prolific, though there were a fair amount of covers in that time, there was still four whole albums of of originals plus an album's worth of one-off releases.

I don’t think you lose talent. (I’m not sure what genius is.) But I think most people lose energy, ambition, and maybe consequently or maybe just in addition, creativity over time.
Then when you consider that pop is overwhelmingly a young person’s form, that’s not a great recipe. (Conversely, if you’re aiming at the older people who have always been fans, you’re competing with your younger, more energetic and driven self PLUS their nostalgia for that version of you.)
So I think remaining relevant, much less brilliant, is a tough thing for even the best to do...which is why even the best rarely (consistently) do.
