And they and other legacy acts really glammed up, too, trying to look 20 years younger. Heart and Starship come to mind, but also those bands you named to varying degrees. When I saw "Still of the Night" in 1987 on MTV, I had no idea David Coverdale had been at it for almost 15 years. How else did those bands present themselves? Often with videos featuring other (younger, sexy) people. The Beach Boys actually fit in this group as well, video-wise. Lots of Stamos and bikini-clad girls! I think I've mentioned this before, but I had absolutely no idea there was a pre 1987 Whitesnake until the early 00s. Somehow, though, The Beach Boys themselves always looked so awkward trying to fit it with their neon baseball caps and shorts with striped socks. Other bands either glammed up, or went with the dignified elder statemen of rock look (blazer, collared shirt, Dockers). The Beach Boys always looked like they hit a sale at K Mart or Ames. Hey, I used to wear those striped socks! I got them on sale at Ames.

A person almost feels bad for Carl in that picture. He's looking great. Brian is looking all right. Mike, Al, and Bruce look dorky and awkward, and Dennis, well ... Dennis sadly looks out of it, absolutely terrible. A person looking at that picture wouldn't believe he was the sex symbol of the group.
But also, I've learned something today: Ames. We don't and as far as I know, didn't have them in Minnesota. Never heard of it! K Mart, Shopko, Pamida, and of course later Target and Wal Mart, those were (and in the latter, are) our discount stores.

And a fourth, Love You, was very close to getting my vote. That said, most of the post- Holland ones I didn't vote for, I think are TERRIBLE covers.

Sheeit, Bruce and Al and those blankety-blank shorts! I'm guessing Bruce has never owned a pair of long pants. Yeah, the Beach Boys are a fashion disaster here, except for the Wilsons.

Back when I was a Beach Boys' newbie (1975-76-77), a couple of the band members (mostly Mike and Brian) started wearing those colorful Hawaiian shirts - and I wanted one! But there were two problems. First, where I lived, you couldn't find any. I scoured all of the clothing stores and ended up traveling a distance until I found one. I purchased one that was conservative color-wise in comparison to the ones Mike was wearing. And that was part of the second problem. I was too self-conscious to wear it! Not many people were wearing Hawaiian shirts in my hometown and I certainly wasn't a fashion trailblazer. I ended up wearing it only to Beach Boys' concerts (maybe once a year) or to selected family events. I won't get into when I started buying those white cotton pants, Mike Love hats, and short shorts...

In my teens and early 20s, I wouldn't be caught dead in a Hawaiian shirt.
But, by 2007, not long after I added The Beach Boys and Buffett to my summer listening, I got my first one. Its funny the random stuff my mind remembers. It was the day Ozzy's Black Rain album was released (early May). I went to KMart because it was on sale for $7.99. After I grabbed the CD, I ventured over to mens wear, and they had some summer stuff on sale. I found a somewhat conservative (I wasn't yet ready for the louder ones) black one for $12.
Since then, I've added several to my collection. I pretty much only wear them at the beach, but I love the rayon material.
This year, I got myself a pair of beach loafers for summertime. I thought these were just a knock off of hush puppies, but apparentltly, they're popular foot wear choices called hey dudes. Look at me. For probably the first time since I wore neon tees and jams shorts in the late 80s, I'm fashionable.

I've never had a Hawaiian shirt, but when I was about 10-15, Hawaiian shorts (and other similar, bright, loud prints) were big. And they were large. We called them "jams," which might have been the common lingo or might have just been one of those weird, local quirks. (One never knows what is normal for everyone, or just normal for how one's own youth!) I wore those kinds of shorts constantly ... and then spandex came into style. I won't talk about whether I wore black spandex shorts with a vertical, neon green-and-black tiger stripe along the sides...
