The mistake with those twofers was having CATP as the first album on that set; and MIU as the first album on it's set. You had to wade through a mediocre album to get to a good one. There are only two tracks I can omit from Sunflower/Surf's Up: Derdrie and Feet. Sunflower is nearly perfect; Surf's Up is very, very good. I would modify SC simply by leaving off the three old songs and replacing them with Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue, California Dreaming, and (okay, shoot me) Problem Child. I might be able to make one good album by combining the best tracks from SIP and Sweet Insanity. - I don't think CATP is that much less quality-wise than Holland. Same with M.I.U. and L.A. (Light Album).
- I had a similar problem combining Sunflower and Surf's Up. Now, I can easily make alternate albums out of those two; there's plenty of material. But combining them? Not easy.
- If you're making an alternate album out of Still Cruisin', yep, absolutely add "Rock 'n' Roll To The Rescue" and "California Dreamin". And how about "Chasin' The Sky" and "Happy Endings". I like "Problem Child" but I think it came out after Still Cruisin'.
- I'd rather put Brian's 1988-89 Sweet Insanity songs with the BB originals/new stuff from 1989's Still Cruisin' and make that a stronger album than try to integrate them into Summer In Paradise (though Lord knows it could've used them ).
I thought Sweet Insanity was 1990-91? I always seem to forget Chasin' the Sky. It's down there by it's lonely self in 1984. Happy Endings is very weak, but I suppose it should be on the album.

I thought Sweet Insanity was 1990-91? My apologies, lonelysummer. Brian recorded "The Spirit Of Rock And Roll" in 1986-87, and "Hotter" and "In My Car" in 1989. But you are correct, the Sweet Insanity sessions were mainly recorded in 1990. So, yes, it would've been chronologically possible and a better fit to combine Sweet Insanity with Summer In Paradise. And, because I think Sweet Insanity contained at least five very good songs, Summer In Paradise probably could've/would've been saved. Frustrating.

I'd like to take a shot at combining Carl And The Passions - "So Tough" and Holland. For me personally, this is one of the easier combinations because my favorite/non-favorite songs on both albums are pretty cut-and-dry and have been for a long time. The only song that I hate to sacrifice is "Funky Pretty". I don't think it's an all-timer by any means, but it is a Brian Wilson composition and it is kinda cool. Many of the CATP and Holland songs are a bit on the long side as Beach Boys' songs go, and it could affect the flexibility of the song choices and the sequencing.
The Beach Boys - Sail On, Sailor (1972)
Side 1 1. You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone 2. Marcella 3. Only With You 4. All This Is That 5. Cuddle Up
Side 2 1. Sail On, Sailor 2. Steamboat 3. The Trader 4. California Saga: Big Sur 5. California Saga: The Beaks Of Eagles 6. California Saga: California

OK, here is my CATP/Holland twoto. The longer songs definitely throws a wrinkle into sequencing: one song shifted here or there can make one side several minutes longer than the other. I ended up with two 20-minute sides, and honestly I'm not entirely convinced I made the right choices even for my own taste. For example, "Hold On, Dear Brother" might be my favorite Blondie/Ricky song, but I ended up going with "Leaving This Town" for an assortment of reasons, one of which was to help even out the running times. (I also wanted to include something with more robust, audible band harmonies.)
I would likely incorporate some of the "Mt. Vernon and Fairway" theme throughout the album, too. And as you can see, I've separated out the "California Saga" material, and so would strip from the mix any linking music there.
The Beach Boys, California (1972)
1. Marcella 2. Sail On, Sailor 3. Big Sur 4. Leaving This Town 5. California
6. Trader 7. Steamboat 8. Only With You 9. You Need a Mess of Help (to Stand Alone) 10. All This Is That

All This Is That "Big Sur" I've got plans for you. To put you on Side 1 and 2. Damnit! I had to shuffle a few things because I'd messed up, and as you can see, I didn't do that properly. The second "Big Sur" is meant to be "Steamboat." I'm going to correct my first post, but it's memorialized in the quotes!

In fact, I appreciate it: it proves somebody read my post! May my blunder live on in proud infamy!

On October 1, 1962, The Beach Boys released their first album, Surfin' Safari. It was a mediocre album. On March 25, 1963, the group released their second album, Surfin' U.S.A. While it was an improvement, I still consider it to be an inconsistent album. But, what if you combined the two albums, deleting the weaker, goofy songs and retaining the stronger, rockin' songs? I think the result would've been a really good album, full of surfing, cars, girls, and rock & roll!
The Beach Boys - Surfin' U.S.A.
Side 1 1. Surfin' Safari
2. Misirlou
3. Chug-A-Lug
4. Little Girl (You're My Miss America) 5. Lonely Sea 6. Surf Jam 7. Surfin' U.S.A.
Side 2 1. 409 2. Shut Down 3. Stoked 4. Noble Surfer 5. Finders Keepers 6. Farmer's Daughter 7. Surfin'
