I think there is a way to do it that's a little sad, and a way to "get away with it."
Some of it is in the lyrics. I think something like "Isn't It Time" managed to nail it--I mean the album version. It felt fun without pretending to be a bunch of 20-year-olds singing. On the other hand, the worst of Love can be pretty embarrassing, all self-referential or with a creepy leering vibe.
And then musically, you can incorporate modernity into your style, or you can dive all-in. The latter seems more desperate to me.
I thought California Calling actually did a pretty good job of sounding slightly contemporary but with BB hallmarks. Although, Al using the word "rad" in the lyrics does feel a little desperate.

I'm going 4. I just don't like the song and flat-out dislike the production. I really like the B-side, but not as a B-side on this release.

I think where CBS and the group really goofed was on the third single from the album...but I'll talk about that when we get to it.

They may have been floundering on the pop charts, but the Adult Contemporary world sure was embracing the 80's Beach Boys. The Beach Boys Medley and Come Go With Me both did well at A/C; Carl scored top 20 A/C hits with Heaven and What You Do to Me; and the group had a huge A/C hit with Getcha Back - top 5 or top 2. It's Gettin' Late peaked at #20. She Believes in Love Again did less well, peaking at #29. I do remember hearing it several times on the radio.

Don't mind me, just catching up: "It's Gettin' Late" is one of the few Beach Boys songs that seems to dip in my estimation each time I revisit it. And, it's not just the production. The only part of the song that I truly enjoy is the verse(?) - the "I've been praying for this moment, since the second I laid eyes on you" section. That's got some life to it! Very enjoyable. But, it's only 20 seconds long. Repeated 3 times...so I like 1 minute of the 3 1/2 minute song.
"It's OK", in this context, isn't helping.
5/10

"Girl I need your lovin', I'm so tired of waiting, come on there's no one else around...." They should have let it run another 30 seconds. The song, in structure, reminds me a bit of "Of the Times" on Youngblood - but that one has an extended ending where Carl gets to strut his vocal chops.
