If my memory serves (which we have recently confirmed, it often does not), Brian began talking about his next album being a rock and roll album around the release of Imagination. He has more or less said since then that his next album would be that, in some configuration or other.
Well, I don't think it's coming. But I decided to pull an Sheriff John Stone and make my own. This uses songs that mostly were done either around that time (starting a few years earlier, with Paley, but not yet released then) through the next decade, with a few of the more recent songs fitting the bill included, too.
I stuck generally to what I think Brian would consider for such an album. Twelve songs, 40 minutes. One cover, 11 originals (one of which is of course a self-remake/cover). I omitted the TLOS tunes because I think they just fit in that context better than outside of it.
It ain't perfect, but it ain't bad.
1. How Could We Still Be Dancin' 2. Desert Drive 3. Run James Run 4. Honeycomb 5. Some Sweet Day 6. Slightly American Music
7. It's OK (LPR remake) 8. Soul Searchin' 9. Rock & Roll Has Got a Hold on Me 10. City Blues 11. My Marianne (only still-unreleased song included) 12. I'm Broke

Great topic! And, your tracklist is very interesting. I have to digest those newer Long Promised Road songs before I critici...er...comment on it. Then, of course, I'd like to take a shot at one. I do have a couple of songs in mind ("Listen To Me", "California Sun", "The Spirit Of Rock And Roll") which would bring it to 14 tracks. There is one song on your list that I just don't like; I think Brian ruined it - "It's OK". I love the song but not Brian's version.

I'll be honest, I didn't exactly labor over it, so your comments are very welcome. It can definitely be improved upon.

I might include the NPP bonus track Don't Worry to this list. Now, I generally like the Joe Thomas stuff, but I do think this one might be a little more rock and roll without him.

Sheriff John Stone, you've reminded me of a few songs. I think I'm going to revise my album, probably later today.
The question is, though, will "Speed Turtle" make the cut!? (I'm only half kidding. Actually I'm not even half kidding. There might be something wrong with me, but I love "Speed Turtle.")

"Speed Turtle" was on my original master list! I also wanted to include "I'm Broke" but Brian's vocal was just too...rough; I like the raw energy of the track, though. The last two songs to miss the cut were "Kiss The Girl" and "He Couldn't Get His Poor Old Body To Move". I didn't feel they were "pure rock & roll" enough but I like those two songs very much.

I'm almost certainly going to include "I'm Broke" even though I'm not such a fan of it, just because I think it's what he'd want on there. Not that I am entirely bending to my speculation over his taste, as opposed to just what I'd do myself. But in that one case, it just seems right for it to be on there. (Kind of like "Honeycomb": in both cases, they are songs he's referenced or returned to live over the years.)

Is there room for "Too Much Sugar"? I find that song somewhat addicting. Played it over and over in the summer of 87, because that's all I had new from Brian; "Sugar" and "Let's Go to Heaven In My Car". That song is a bit rockier than typical Brian, I say include both songs.

It doesn't fit into my little project, since what I'm doing is an album of tunes that were recorded since he began talking about "my next album is going to be a rock and roll album," which is in the mid-late 90s. But someone doing a more broad project certainly could use it.

I’m surprised that “Going Home” isn’t on the list.

I’m surprised that “Going Home” isn’t on the list. In my specific case, I left TLOS songs off because I just feel they fit so well in that concept album as it is. I really was just going for an album of rock and roll music (as Brian hears/understands it), but as standalone songs. So "Going Home," "Morning Beat," and I guess even "Mexican Girl" just fit too well where they are.
But musically, 100% it belongs. Omission is just a quirk of my own little self-imposed rules.

It should've appeared on Brian Wilson 1988 (on Side 2; it's included on the Deluxe Edition). Your story about playing "Too Much Sugar" in 1987 is identical to mine. I was just so excited to get new, solo Brian and I played that 45 over and over. And, I remember thinking how great/catchy that song was. I bought the Police Academy IV soundtrack album just for "Let's Go To Heaven In My Car". I'd play that song a few times and then put the album away.

I’m surprised that “Going Home” isn’t on the list. Yes, "Going Home" fits, no doubt about it. I mean, it even has that "rock, roll, rollin' down the river" part. But, like Kapitan, I just couldn't pluck it from that concept album. I went with more obscure standalone tracks, though "Going Home" could be utilized as a standalone track, too, with a little tweaking.
Back in 1985 or 1986, I read a newspaper article (and even tore it out) about Brian Wilson considering a solo album. I still remember the photo that accompanied the article. I saved it for a few years; I might still have it stored somewhere. Anyway, I distinctly remember Brian saying in this article/interview that he would like to record a rock & roll album. Why do I mention this? I have seen several fans post on various message boards that Brian has been considering a rock & roll album since the 1990's, but, I swear it was even before that. It was before he technically started his solo career, over 35 years ago.

Thanks for that, because I remember being surprised to have read it in some old interview from the 90s. It's driving me crazy because I can't recall exactly where, but I want to say during Imagination promotional interviews, he said it about his next album. At that time, I was surprised about it because I knew he had been saying it over and over in the '00s, and this pushed it back further. If it goes back another decade, that's hilarious.
Maybe he got the idea from Carl in 1981!
