For me, the Super Bowl's highlight was ... the wings I made! I did a kind of Indian spicing, marinating them in yogurt, tamarind, garam masala, a TON of diced garlic, ginger, ghost pepper, cilantro, and coriander, plus a little honey, ketchup (no, not very Indian!), and apple cider vinegar. They were fantastic.

For me, the Super Bowl's highlight was ... the wings I made! They were fantastic. Those wings sound amazing! We were old school - just eggs (with an overnight soak), flour, salt and pepper and a choice of six different bottled sauces. Also did the tried and true Velveeta, Rotel and Hamburger dip (I always add extra jalepeno’s, cumin, chili powder, etc.). My daughter and her boyfriend came over - so she got to celebrate with us. I'm doing a Middle Eastern-flavored meal for my family's visit tomorrow. I think everything except dessert is planned and purchased. Part of my decision-making process was how much I could prep today and just cook or mix tomorrow. The meal was a little annoying because of dietary restrictions among attendees, but hopefully there are at least a few options for each part of the meal to accommodate.
Snacks: mixed olives, roasted nuts, garlic crackers, and sliced bell peppers, with a dill-feta dip (and I'll likely do a yogurt dip). I was thinking I'd make a strawberry-hibiscus lemonade, too, either to have plain, with sparkling water, or as a mixer with booze, depending on each person's preferences.
Entree: A shepherd's pie but to the theme, so in addition to being lamb and onions topped with potatoes (possibly a sweet and white potato blend), I'm adding to the filling fennel, tomatoes, and spinach, plus a ton of garlic and cinnamon, cloves, chilis, plus fresh oregano, dill, thyme, and mint.
Secondary entree/meat: Za'atar and lemon marinated chicken wings.
Sides: A cucumber-tomato-dill salad, sauteed (or roasted ... TBD) fennel.
I still have to figure out dessert. I'm not great with dessert, and I'm supposed to keep it gluten free and ideally low carbs.

Dessert: whipped ricotta (with powdered sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest) with fresh strawberries and blueberries, homemade granola and a drizzle of good honey.
I am also adding roasted fennel with garlic as a side.

The other day I saw in NYT a recipe for a comfort food so simple that no recipe is really required, once you've heard of it: haluski, or as I've since learned is either identical or similar, lazanki. It's an Eastern European carb-overload of a dish that seems to have had variations among Ashkenazi Jews and Polish Catholics (in a version with bacon). It's fried cabbage and onion, possibly including bacon or even some ground meat, mixed with egg noodles.
I've been looking at dozens of variations. As I sad, they go from vegetarian and kosher to loaded with bacon and/or ground beef or pork, even smoked sausage. Some involve tomato (or tomato paste), but most do not. Many cook the cabbage-onion mixture for 20, 30 minutes, really caramelizing them. Some are seasoned with things like carraway, paprika, and marjoram, while others use just salt and pepper. Some are more like a stew, others seem quite dry. Some involve sour cream, and/or fresh parsley or other herbs.
Regardless, it struck me as something I just had to make. So today I'm making a version (and some homemade quick-sourdough rolls). After all--and despite hot days ahead soon--it's likely to top out around 70 degrees today with a heavy cloud cover. It's almost autumnal, if you squint hard enough!
