It seems I've got less patience for HCTN '79 by the day. I simply can't get past the backing track anymore. And, in trying to just focus solely on the vocals, I'm realizing they aren't that great either. I'd suggest, if songs like "My Diane" and "Baby Blue" are overrated due to the tracks that surround them, then the same may be true of these vocals (either overall or Carl's lead, specifically). The only part of the song I really like, and appreciate, is the "round" of background vocals as heard from 2:45-2:52. "Baby Blue" on the other hand is a favorite of mine. Easily a 9 or 10 on its own. But, like I said, I'm having trouble getting past the backing track of HCTN '79 so I can only go up to a '4' for the single and rank it LAST on my list. (Fortunately for "Baby Blue", and my conscience, there are numerous worse singles on the horizon, so it won't be last for long.)

First, I would like to know who thought about plucking the song from Wild Honey and transforming it into disco. That was some great insight. Seriously. It's almost the perfect song to use. That may be true. And I, too, would like to know whose idea it was. Oh, and don't forget, SJS, Mike & Celebration were NOT done with disco.

I'm going with a 5 on this. I like "Baby Blue" well enough (though even that isn't a 10, a 9 ... maybe not even a high 8). But whatever skills went into making "HCTN," I just don't enjoy it, even in the shorter single versions (which is what we're rating). So a low-8/high-7 B-side plus a 3 or so for the A-side averages out to 5ish.
I hate to say, but 5 is probably going to be a pretty common rating from me going forward. A few a little higher, quite a few lower. Things are going to really just devolve from here for me, with some welcome exceptions. Realistically, just as was the case for the first couple albums' worth, if the band's catalogue only consisted of material from here forward, I would barely be a casual fan, if even that.
