Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal is 90 today. He is well regarded, but Miles Davis held him up as one of the absolute giants of the form. Curiously, rapper Earl Sweatshirt has mentioned him as influential in recent years.

Apparently shared with another guitar legend, Carlos Santana, also 73. (I'm strongly partial to Mr. May's music, myself. But I'll admit it's cool these two were born on the same day.)
EDIT: I'm an idiot. May's birthday was yesterday; Santana's is today. So they were born a day apart.

I thought the same thing, but I follow a music page that tends to post birthdays a day early. Speaking of May, and maybe this is better for the Queen thread, I do wish he'd pick up that Red Special and put out some new music. Since Queen ended, he's released two solo albums - Back to the Light which was pretty strong and Another World, which had its moments - and a fairly lackluster Queen + Paul Rodgers album. But, since business is good with the Queen + Adam Lambert thing, it seems unlikely we'll get any new music from Brian any time soon.

Happy 73rd to Don Henley. Thanks for all the great music. Good one, kds. A classic Brian Wilson story there...

Happy 73rd to Don Henley. Thanks for all the great music. Good one, kds. A classic Brian Wilson story there... I figured that reference wouldn't go unnoticed here. For the record, I think Brian was right prior to scratching out "great." Maybe Jeff Bridges would've been a good choice to play Brian after all (he was at one time tied to what eventually became Love and Mercy).

And, in another Jeff Bridges' ironic twist, I believe he was the narrator on one of The Beach Boys' documentaries (maybe Endless Harmony?).

Happy 67th Birthday to Rush bassist / singer / keyboardist Geddy Lee. Do you think Geddy will have any kind of a solo career now that Rush is over?

Happy 67th Birthday to Rush bassist / singer / keyboardist Geddy Lee. Do you think Geddy will have any kind of a solo career now that Rush is over? I think it's possible. He's the only one of them that ever dipped his toes in that water, back in 2000 when Rush were on hiatus due to Neil Peart dealing with family tragedies. His voice has held up fairly well over the years, so I could see him trying to fill that Rush gap out there.

James Hetfield, songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitarist for Metallica, is 57 today. He helped create a new kind of heavy metal music and against all odds, became very commercially successful with it.
