Artist: I'm going with Neil Innes, I like almost all of The Rutles' songs. I know they're basically Beatles parodies, but he wrote many songs I genuinely love. Album: ImagineSong: I can not not say this one! My pick is I Get Around. One of the best song intros of all time, great energy, immaculate performance and production. Easily my favorite single by The Beach Boys. I must now go watch The Rutles this weekend! Ricky Fataar! Beatles song parodies! What is not to like - and it’s been forever since I’ve seen it. Then might follow with This is Spinal Tap, where I will count the drummers!

Just the next letter's picks, now.
Artist/Band: Joanna Newsom
Album: Joe's Garage, Frank Zappa (1979)
Song: " Jennifer Louise," a power pop gem from Of Montreal ( Adhils Arboretum, 2002), forgotten as it fell between their uber-twee and Prince ripoff phases. But this was hard! Other contenders: Julia (Fast Romantics), Just My Luck (Dawes), John Allyn Smith Sails (Okkervil River), John Birch Society (Chad Mitchell Trio), to name just a few.

Artist/Band: Jeff Buckley- Grace is one of my favorite albums of all time. Sad that was his only studio album. So much talent and a 7 octave voice. If you have never heard it, give it a listen.
Album: Jagged Little Pill- Alanis Morissette. One of those albums I can listen to all of the way through. Now there is even a Broadway Musical based on this album.
Song: The John Wayne- Little Green Cars. "It's easy to hate yourself, when all your love is in someone else". Those lyrics, beautiful vocals and talented musicians. I got to see this Irish band twice before they broke up. It's a shame they never made it big. They did play on Jimmy Fallon and at SXSW, Coachella and Lollapalooza, so they had the exposure.

I wish I could say I thought of that but decided to go more obscure. But nope, shamefully it didn't even cross my mind. And I'd say this is the best J album.

Oh yes, we have that one. My favourite track, the one I link on message boards whenever someone I like is hurting, is "Lover, You Should've Come Over". Ye gods, what emotion...

I have a vaguely Jeff-related anecdote, for another time... Here you go, carllove . I’ll try to keep it brief! On 5 September 2001 I attended the launch of a book I'd worked on. During the speech a graphic designer colleague whispered to me, "You’ll never guess who's here — Gary Lucas!" Now Lucas had played guitar with Captain Beefheart's band and had even been his manager for a while. Anyway, we were introduced. (It struck me only recently that from then on I was a handshake away from Don Van Vliet!) We exchanged some musical pleasantries but only briefly, as he said he had to call a cab. Apparently, he'd got wind of plans to find him a guitar and get him to play! Later, I heard music and indeed, there he was, on a platform with somebody's battered flat top. I wasn't familiar with either his or Jeff's music in those days but I recognized one of the pieces when I bought a Gary Lucas album a week later and discovered it was a bonus track called "Rise Up To Be". Now, this eventually became the title track of his friend Jeff Buckley's album. This live version (with brief introductory explanation) was recorded in Amsterdam in 2003: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Lucas

Oh, K, it's a new day.
Artist/Band: Kiwi Jr - figured I'd take the opportunity to promote one of the rock bands I've enjoyed the past few years. Both Football Money and Cooler Returns are good albums.
Album: King Kong, Jean Luc Ponty (1970)
Song: "Killer Queen," Queen (1974)
