I had Hard Promises on through lunch and some work and realized as it ended that the only two songs I could remember anything about were "The Waiting" (which was the only song from the album I'd ever heard before) and "You Can Still Change Your Mind," which had just ended.
To be fair, it was on in the background. But the fact that it didn't stick with me at all without me taking notes doesn't bode well for my opinion of that album. That said, I heard nothing annoying or offensive to my sensibilities. It was just background music.
Again, I'm surprised you don't know some of these other songs - "A Woman in Love", "The Nightwatchman". These songs were all over radio up here in the Northwest back in '81. I think the track with Stevie Nicks, "Insider", got some play, too, although not as much as the one on her album.

I was familiar with the Muppet Movie soundtrack, some of my parents' records, and Christmas carols. I think you could find many things that were all over the radio in '81 that I don't know.

I remember hearing Woman in Love on our active rock and classic rock stations over the years. The latter would play it during "Two for Tuesdays" when they'd pair a staple with a less than obvious choice.

I remember hearing Woman in Love on our active rock and classic rock stations over the years. The latter would play it during "Two for Tuesdays" when they'd pair a staple with a less than obvious choice. The Heartbreakers songs I remember hearing over the years on Classic Rock radio would be Breakdown, Refugee, A Woman in Love, Don't Do Me Like That, Even the Losers, Here Comes My Girl, The Waiting, The Nightwatchman, You Got Lucky, Rebels, Don't Come Around Here No More, Jammin' Me, Runaway Trains, Into the Great Wide Open, Learning to Fly, Mary Jane's Last Dance, Walls; I'm probably forgetting some, but those were the ones I couldn't turn on the radio without hearing. Radio up here pretty much stopped playing new Heartbreakers stuff after the She's the One soundtrack. Of TP solo stuff, you can pretty much include most of Full Moon Fever - that album was huge! Free Fallin', Runnin' Down a Dream, Face in the Crowd, Zombie Zoo, Yer So Bad, Feel a Whole Lot Better, ...and You Don't Know How it Feels, You Wreck Me, maybe a couple others from Wildflowers. The last time I heard a new TP song on the radio, I was up near Canada, and a station was playing a song from Hypnotic Eye. The Canadian stations don't seem so locked into the "don't play any new material by anyone over 40" ethos. It's funny, though, they have no problem going back and playing stuff they ignored when it was current, which in this case, means digging up American Girl, I Need to Know, or Listen to Her Heart. And I can't leave out Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. That's right there with Free Fallin' in the overplayed catagory.

I just stumbled across this YouTube original doc that premiered yesterday, "Somewhere You Feel Free - Making of Wildflowers." I'm thinking it could be fun to watch and of interest to some of you.

BTW if you're wondering, there is a (brief) mention of Carl Wilson's participation. Skip to about 1:13:45.

I heard about that doc, but didn't know it was a YouTube product.

I haven't ever kept up with Mike Campbell, formerly of the Heartbreakers, in his solo career. However, he's got a new album out today and I was skipping around through some of the songs. I think fans of Petty would probably like it quite a bit. It's a lot like Petty's music, though a bit rougher, a bit heavier. Even his voice sounds like Petty's sometimes.
Here is a tune feat. Ian Hunter.

Instead of spamming the "Surprised to Hear..." thread, I'll update this post when I hear the Beach Boys on Tom Petty's Sirius XM channel.
