Rayland Baxter's whole Wide Awake album is quirky, thoughtful, and overall just wonderful, but I'm super into this lovely song in particular lately. Love the reference to Crimson and Clover (over and over). I also love that album. Definitely among my most-listened-to from 2018. It's also probably one of the dozen or so albums of the past decade that I think is strong more or less start to finish as opposed to just a few songs.

Absolutely, every song on it is fantastic, and it's a nice seamless listen all the way through. 79 Shiny Revolvers is probably my favourite Side A track. I knew nothing about him before picking this album up (I have a friend who likes to slip records into my pile when we're record shopping together, and this was one of them). I haven't listened to Baxter's other albums but apparently he's more of a country dude, and this one is a bit of a departure for him into Beatles-inspired pop.

I'm trying to remember how I heard of him. This was certainly the only album I'd heard (and still is). I was thinking maybe Marc Maron's podcast, but a quick search there and he doesn't come up. It was a lovely surprise though. I really appreciate those artists/bands I wasn't expecting and suddenly happen to hear, or click on a review and then sample, etc. So delightful.

Listening to the new Bruce Johnston interview TK referenced elsewhere on the board and heard Bruce praise this. I tend not to like surf music and hadn't heard of it or them, but this is really a cool song & recording.

It is indeed. However, this is the "Bombora" that gets my vote (by The Original Surfaris--an important distinction, I'm told). But if you tend not to like surf music, Cap'n, you certainly won't like this!

Found myself listening to this today (long story). Country and gospel are probably the last two musical genres I still have to get to grips with (and jazz, but that's another even longer story) and here they are together in one song. "This World Is Not My Home" seems to have begun life as a hymn although the internet is strangely silent on the matter. This is the version by Fern Jones: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fern_Jones

The Carter Family doing the same.

PBS aired the entire Ken Burns' Country Music documentary last Saturday afternoon/evening. I sat through the whole thing; I couldn't pry myself away. I think I enjoyed it more the second time around. Marty Stuart said that country music "started" with the Carter Family's 1927 recordings (not really but you knew what he meant) and that singers of today like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift owe a big thank you to Sarah Carter.

Last weekend I heard a song that I haven’t heard in ages - Don’t Answer Me by Alan Parsons Project. Such a good song. But it reminded me that I have an Alan Parsons Project record sitting on my shelf that my uncle gave me last year, and that I hadn't gotten around to playing it yet. So I’ve been listening to I Robot this week. Really gorgeous album. Love this song:

You know what? While I've known the name The Alan Parsons Project since I was a kid, I don't know that I've ever knowingly heard them in my life. I've never sought out their music or knowingly come across it. I just listened to that song you linked, though, and thought it was really pleasant.

I recognized Don’t Answer Me, when I heard it last weekend, so I think it’s a much more well known song. The one I’m most familiar with is Eye in the Sky. But other than that, they seem to have escaped my attention until now.

The Alan Parsons Project also had two other big hits that were kind of Beach Boyish - "Time" (Dennis Wilson-like?) and "Don't Answer Me" (check out the Spectorian intro):

Two lovely songs there, Sheriff, particularly #2. I've been listening to a retrospective of country gospel songs by Fern Jones. This is an area I never thought I'd find myself in but life is full of curious twists and turns. That's hubby Ray singing the lower voice on "This World Is Not My Home": music.apple.com/gb/artist/fern-jones/117613574

Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt, and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert. Then I fumbled through my clothes and found my cleanest dirty, and I washed my face and combed my hair and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day...

This album fits the stereotypical complaint one often hears about technically superior musicians' work: all the emphasis on sonic perfection drains the recording of life.
But to be clear, I personally love a lot of the music that gets hit with that criticism. So it's in the ear of the beholder, to be sure. But Alan Parsons Project is not my thing.
