It's been a tradition at my "hobby forum" to post U2's "New Year's Day" on the day in question. Since its moderator (my good friend for more than a decade) passed away, I've pretty well abandoned that place -- too many memories. So I'm posting it here, where in time it may also become a tradition: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year%27s_Day_(U2_song)

Yesterday a good friend (and ex-bandmate) sent me a link for an album that Jeff Lynne released two years ago as ELO (apparently he did all the parts of every song except a piano solo). I had no prior knowledge of this album; somehow it flew under my radar. I must say, I'm impressed as, IMO, it's got that classic ELO sound.

I remember a song made an appearance in a Super Bowl commercial at the time.

This is one heck of an album. Why Leaf Hound's Growers of Mushroom isn't considered a classic is quite beyond me. If you want to hear the album as originally released in 1971, you need the first nine tracks (to just before the 37-minute mark): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf_Hound

In reading that bio, I'm guessing the band's personnel changes might have had something to do with the lack of awareness of the group/album. Looks like they more than fully turned over the roster just in that couple-year initial lifespan. Hard to build momentum that way.

I just discovered The Blossom Toes' 1967 album We Are Ever So Clean by reading the AllMusic review of a deluxe reissue of the album. I'd never heard of it or them before. (It's astounding how many albums that get deluxe reissues I've never heard of.) Apparently it has been long-since lauded as a British psychedelic classic.

I knew about this album at the time but looked down on it, the way I looked down on most UK psychedelic stuff. See here for a more recent assessment: endlessharmony.boards.net/post/29966/thread

This is what I've been listening to this weekend: the first two albums by Culture Club with a sublime non-album A-side in between. This gives the sequence "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" and "Karma Chameleon" (with its opening three notes a soundalike for those of "You're So Good To Me") at its centre. But it all sounds super: * Kissing to Be Clever (Full Album)*

Well, I gave the whole thing a listen last night and was mightily impressed! Everyone will make their own associations with "classical" composers of orchestral music but the one I'm reminded of most, not the least obvious of choices, is Aaron Copland. Like much of his music, this project evokes open spaces in the wild. Unlike much of his music, I don't see any people there. I have a complex jigsaw puzzle waiting in the wings so I'll be listening to The Seven Symphonies more often in the coming days. Maybe I'll have more to say then.

Some hardcore punk rock from Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - "Chinese Rock" written by Dee Dee Ramone. Most of The Heartbreakers - Johnny Thunders (lead guitar), Jerry Nolan (drums), Walter Lure (guitar/lead vocals), and Billy Rath (bass) - are dead. Richard Hell, who wasn't a member for very long, is still living.

I've been listening to the new Ghost album Impera a lot since it was released on March 11.
On my first listen, I was actually somewhat underwhelmed. The lead single Call Me Little Sunshine was more in tune with the somewhat darker Ghost of their first three albums. So, when the album started with the lighter Kaisarion and Spillways, I was caught a little off guard. But, the more I listen, the more I like it. Ghost have always had a sense for melody, but over their last two albums, they've infused more of a lighter almost AOR feel.
So far, their career trajectory reminds me a bit of Blue Oyster Cult. BOC's first three albums were darker and heavy at times. While, albums like Agents of Fortune, Spectres, and Mirrors saw the band get a little more radio friendly, a little less mysterious. I feel like Ghost have been somewhat the same way with their last two albums.
