With kds highlighting these Summer In Paradise covers, I'm only realizing now how much of a covers' album Summer In Paradise really is:
1. Hot Fun In The Summertime 2. Surfin' 3. One Summer Night 4. Remember (Walking In The Sand) 5. Under The Boardwalk 6. Forever
That's half the album!

It was a pretty lazy album when it came to mining material. I think their cover of Hot Fun is decent. It's amazing how poorly they executed Under the Boardwalk and Remember (Walking in the Sand).

BBs sang each song better than original artists. Super band, phew.
Except "Why do fools" (terrible song). Obviously SIP.

That Laurel Canyon doc is fantastic, saw it a while back and really enjoyed it. So many great stories from the people who were there!

Following up a couple of remarks in the Shoutbox, here is the Boys' glorious version of "Barbara Ann"--the 45:

Terry Jacks had a No. 1 hit with "Seasons In The Sun" in 1974. This is a rare instance where The Beach Boys covered a song BEFORE it was released or became a hit. This is The Beach Boys' version with an interesting little interview at the beginning. I wonder if "Season's In The Sun" will appear on the upcoming boxed set? If not, The Beach Boys can re-record it for their new album for the 60th Anniversary reunion, keeping Carl's lead vocal.

Here's a great summer song that The Boys covered.
Talk about going full circle. The organ inspired Amusement Parks USA, then The Beach Boys did this one on 15 Big Ones. While I do prefer the original, I think it's the best cover on 15BO.

Probably my favourite Party outtake! What I don't like about it--and about Party! in general--is that while the unplugged, informal vibe is fun, the arrangements mostly avoid the very thing that makes the Beach Boys stand out: vocal harmonies. As a "normal" rock band, they're fine. But "fine" isn't what I want from the Beach Boys, I want those voices doing special things.

It is a bit of a drag that the wing-it (wung-it, past tense?) performances don’t include too many harmonies on Party, but I don’t mind hearing the boys just kind of jam like that. Still fun. And I wish Satisfaction had made the cut for the album. Sure they flub it a bit, but it’s not like what did end up on the album is flub-free.

The lone exception is the cover of Devoted to You, sung by Brian and Mike, which is incredible.
