I saw a review of a new album, No Exit by the Resonars. I, like most of the world, had never heard of the Resonars, but the review said they sounded like the Who combined with the Rubinoos or the Shoes. That got my attention, so I had a listen ... and I'll be darned, they really do. I bought it. Good stuff! Apparently mostly done on a 4-track (somebody still uses 4-tracks!) by one guy at home, and he's been doing this for like 20 years!
If you're looking for power pop that doesn't skimp on the power, this is it!
EDIT - I was the first view of that video. LOL. Poor Resonars, a 20-year career and nobody cares.

Not a very interesting week of new releases from what I can tell. I was surprised and excited to see an Elvis Costello covers EP with McCartney, Dylan, Cash and Bacharach songs ... til I saw what they were and had a sampling. Meh.

KDS, have you listened to the new Sammy Hagar album? I sampled it: he sounds in great voice (for a guy in his 70s!), but the songs didn't do much for me.

To be honest, he hasn't done a whole lot in recent years that I've liked. I did like his fun in the sun album Livin It Up from around 2005. To be honest, I didn't even find much of the two albums from Chickenfoot to be that great either.

Back to the album I've praised lately, Vampire Weekend's Father of the Bride. Here's a performance from Kimmel that, while not the best song or the best performance (vocally, and because the intro is extended way too long), is kind of nice. Why? Because it's showing that musicians who play instruments are fun to watch and hear!
(This tune reminds me of Paul Simon meets Frank Zappa.)

He's had his moments, but he can use real collaborators. I don't know, maybe someone like EVH... He had a good run of material early in his solo career, but that was quite some time ago now. Since Ronnie Montrose is no longer with us, I'd gladly welcome a return to Van Halen, but Eddie doesn't seem to be very interested in doing new music. Even that VH album from 2012 was mostly older songs that didn't make the cut on early VH albums.

I don’t like it as much as I thought I would based on “Everyday.” I still absolutely love that song, but found much of the album nondescript and samey. It’s not bad, but it was a letdown.

The second pre-release single from Bruce Springsteen's new album, "There Goes My Miracle," isn't some brilliant song, but it sure as hell is tuneful. It's also sweeping in scope, with string arrangement to match.

I hadn't heard about it and it doesn't seem prominently noted on iTunes or allmusic, etc., but McCartney has released an expanded edition of Egypt Station. At a glance it appears to have three or four new songs added as well as live versions of some of the regular album tracks.

At a glance it appears to have three or four new songs added as well as live versions of some of the regular album tracks. As a music fan of some of these artists who are releasing these special editions (Brian Wilson has done it), I should be OK with it. The more music made available the better, right? But I struggle with it. These Best Buy only or Target only releases, and these after-the-main-CD-is-released expanded editions are borderline money grabs. Whether you love the artist or not, and whether you welcome the new music or not, you can't help but feel, "Come on, I just bought the damn thing, now you want me to buy it again!" Just my opinion...

I agree entirely. If you're going to release multiple versions--which is fine--I'd prefer they all be available upon initial release, and be sold in escalating tiers of extras. But if I'm not mistaken, No Pier Pressure had some extras on some releases and others on others. Or here, with the extras coming out a year later? That's not cool.
Either all at once, or on the 20th or 25th anniversary, sure. But not a year later!
(For those buying digitally, I guess it's less an issue--assuming the extras are available as individual purchases, which often they aren't.)

Yeah, but I don't even like the multiple versions, even if they're released at the same time. Maybe I'm being lazy, but I think it's stupid inconveniencing fans by making them purchase the CD at a Target or a Best Buy or whatever instead of just purchasing it at their usual convenient store/place. The artist should just be happy that the fan is laying out the money, not forcing them to...track it down.
And, I also don't like the artistic compromise of multiple versions. I know I'm anal about sequencing and such, but this tacking tracks on at the end dilute the concept. If the bonus/added tracks weren't good enough or "right" to be included in the main CD, why add them at the end? Either they are good enough and should be inserted in the tracklist, or they're not good enough and don't belong on the CD. It almost makes the artist look like he/she is saying "This CD isn't strong enough on its own, but I wanna sell as many as I can, so I'm tacking on these extra songs, even though they weren't good enough to make the cut."
