Here is a song I began around New Year's of 2021-22, but didn't finish; then I did (mostly) finish it in December 2022. I tweaked it a little this month and, finally, here is the aptly named "New Year," a power pop kind of thing with some new wave synths. I'm not happy with the mix (which, when it sounds great in my headphones, sounds awful through speakers, and vice versa), but such is life. Hell, I'm not a pro, what do I care!? I hope you like "New Year," which you can find here. The mix of this song--not to mention a couple of bum notes in the lead vocal, where it's doubled in the refrain ("anything could happen")--had been bugging me since January! So I redid the lead vocal (and double) this afternoon and remixed, turning up the guitar and bass, turning down the synth just a bit, and turning down the lead vocal some. As always, it's found here.

I had an idea yesterday that is rare for me, but that I acted upon: I did a second, very different mix of the same recording. I was curious whether I could take the synth-oriented "Trojan Horse" that I just finished over the weekend and make a convincing rock mix of it without adding any new content whatsoever. Whether I succeeded is a matter of opinion, of course. But what I did was: - Change the amps and settings of the guitars (which, being added via the software rather than recorded naturally, was possible), so they are more distorded and heavier. - Change the synth sounds to Hammond organ. - Switch the drum kit. - Adjust the EQ and compression on the bass. - Add some delay to the guitar solo and bridge vocals. After that, I adjusted the levels (guitars and drums up, synth-turned-organ down) and the panning. The new "Trojan Horse (Rock Mix)" is found here. And now I've split the difference. Removed the Hammond organ (mostly) replacing with marimba. Softened both electric guitar sounds a little. Turned up guitar, turned down vocls. The third, and hopefully final, "Trojan Horse" is here.

After a solid half-year, I finally did some music in the past few days! My little, uh, health distraction of late last week into the weekend jumpstarted a song idea, which I wrote start to finish on Monday. Yesterday I put down a basic acoustic guitar (doubled), programmed in the drums (or at least beginnings of them), and a little more. Hoping to get to it after work today to do a few more instrumental parts--bass, an electric guitar or two. There is more to the arrangement that I'm still thinking through, and of course there will be vocals. I'm hoping to have it totally done by the end of the weekend at the latest, before I lose momentum.

I finished the recording (for now, at least). Honestly I don't know what I think of it! I like the song, and it was really fun to write and play on acoustic, but I got hot and cold on it the past few days as I recorded. I ended up deleting almost everything I'd done previously and reimagining it, then going back somewhat... Anyway, it's done for the time being. If you listen, I hope you enjoy. "Again (Mad as a Hatter)" is here.

Trying to get back on a roll, earlier this week I finished writing a song I'd begun at the beginning of last year and I've been recording it the past couple of days. It's an oddball of a song, both structurally and lyrically. But once I thought of it, it stuck in my head. So here it is! I hope you like "Unknowable Eventuality," which you can find here.

A while back, a friend of mine jokingly said I ought to record "Baby Got Back." Obviously I wasn't going to do the Sir Mix-A-Lot song, but I had an idea. Fast forward a year, I finally finished writing and fully recorded it this week. Suffice to say, it's entirely different than the one you know. Here is my song of the same name. I hope you enjoy it.

Happy Valentine's Day (a few days early). For the moderately annoying holiday, I did a new arrangement and recording of a tune I wrote about nine years ago. It's titled "Valentine's Day ii" because I already had a song titled "Valentine's Day." (The ii implies a minor chord built on the second chord of a key ... but the song is in a major key. I just like the look of ii instead of II or 2. And it is a little sad, if not technically based on a minor key or chords.) This arrangement has a string quartet, harp, percussion, and two vocal parts. I hope you enjoy "Valentine's Day ii." You can find it here.
