Adjacent to Robert Fripp, anyway: former King Crimson members Adrian Belew and Tony Levin are teaming with guitar wizard Steve Vai and Tool's drummer Danny Carey to form Beat, a band that will perform Belew-era King Crimson material. Fripp has endorsed the project. The group only has one show announced so far--in San Diego in September--but presumably there are more to come. Very interesting. I don't believe Vai and Belew have ever paired together for anything, and I didn't realize he was interested in that era of Crimson music. But he also is releasing a collaboration with Joe Satriani, so maybe he's just at a time of life that he wants to play with interesting people. (He has played with Fripp, sort-of: Fripp was an unannounced opening act for the first G3 tour, which I saw. He was on stage already playing his loops and soundscapes by the time doors opened. People were confused. This was pre-internet, so it was a surprise.)

All four of the aforementioned being interviewed jointly by Rick Beato, apparently right around the day I had posted previously. Seems it was happening in near-real time. Here's Belew, Levin, Vai, and Carey discussing their "live '80s King Crimson" band/project.
